“Poor housekeeping and ambiance.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2011

I stick mostly to Hilton family properties, but tried out this Residence Inn on this trip. It was a pretty forgettable stay and made me realize that I need to just stick to Hilton (with Hyatt chain as the second option).

The best thing about this hotel was the outstanding location, if you have a car. Within 5min drive to Southcoast Plaza, Mitsuwa center (big Japanese shopping/dining complex), and many interesting places to eat at. Hotel's right off Bear St exit off Fwy-73, and you can get on 73, 55 or 405 freeway very easily from the hotel.

Parking's free and plentiful. Free internet worked adequately, if you connected via wire. Room's pretty well-insulated and you don't hear neighbors too much. The front desk staff was attentive and helpful.

Housekeeping is a disaster here. They must not have the habit of vacuuming about 1" of the carpet along the walls, and this was pretty evident by the amount of dust/hair particles that were present consistenly along the carpet edges in the entire room. Because we have an infant who crawls everywhere and then puts her hand in her mouth all the time, I had to spend a good amount of time cleaning all this mess... it was fairly disgusting. 1 out of our 3 days, the room was never made. The other two days, they came past 2.30pm. Couple of times when we needed something, the housekeeping would never come through so the front desk staff would have to serve us directly after a while. We also noticed that some of the shampoo bottles they'd leave were less than half empty, which made us wonder if they took half-used bottles from other guests and simply redistributed them to us.

Also if you're like us and take your shoes off indoors, I suggest you reconsider while you're staying here... or bring a pair of disposable slippers. After a couple hours of being in the room, your sock bottoms turn dark. Probably has something to do with this place being exterior-access... then again, I've stayed at Staybridge Suites with similar setup, and I didn't have this sort of issue with them.

One other annoyance was the type of guests staying here. I've stayed at Homewood Suites and Summerfield Suites in other parts of LA/OC, and I generally found that most of the guests were there either on business or on vacation. At this Residence Inn, there are guests smoking out and wondering around at all times of the day, including our neighboring room which always had their door open and seemed to have many different people coming and going at all hours of the day. High school age kids seemed to take over the basketball court for much of the afternoon (not even sure if they were staying there). People are using the court outside of the regulated court hours, and some are tossing balls into the bushes once they're done instead of returning the ball to the front desk. The gatehouse is in chaos all throughout the breakfast hours, and frankly I've never had to deal with so many other slobs in any hotel breakfast area. They have one computer for guest use in the lobby area, but I couldn't recall an instance where it was actually free. One night a couple of police cars came to deal with some situation... not sure what was going on. All in all, the ambiance here felt more like a subsidized housing complex than a 3-star hotel, at least during the time that we stayed.

Stayed a week, perfect visit. Really good free breakfast, fast free internet, great evening light food & refreshments (but only Mon-Weds). Close to a highway, but noise is effectively shielded. Free shuttle service within 5 mile radius (including SNA airport) a plus. Nice LCD TV, full kitchen (even a corkscrew). Interesting multi-building layout, feels like a housing development, not a big-box hotel with a sardine-can feel and elevator noise.

I enjoyed my stay at this property. I see some of the reviews made comments about rooms being dirty; I would disagree -- my room was quite clean (and besides, do you expect hotels to shampoo the carpets between every guest?). The room was spacious and nicely laid-out . . . with a very large work area nicely oriented. Bed was very comfortable and I had a good sleep.

Guests who are new to the Residence Inn concept will need to be comfortable with the "apartment complex feel" about the place, and also be comfortable with direct entry from the outside into the rooms in a somewhat dimly-lit environment. The surrounding area seemed to be a safe, middle class neighborhood of single family homes, but still I could see how someone might be a bit leery of the security situation.

Some other comments:

- The staff was, without exception, extremely friendly.
- Complimentary shuttle to/from Orange County airport was appreciated, though at 25 minutes the wait for the van to come get me at the airport seemed kind of long.
- "Fitness center" was acceptable but not great . . . if you're a runner, the surrounding residential neighborhood has sidewalks and is good for running and there is a nice, large park ("Tewinkle Park") about 3/4 mile away that provides some nice running opportunities.
- My mobile phone was out of commission so I had to use the room's landline phone, including for a couple of long conference calls. It would have been nice if it had speaker phone capability.
- Not much within walking distance in terms of restaurants and such; if you'll be car-less, take this into consideration. There is a Japanese BBQ place next door and a liquor store that had a small selection of convenience store items. But no fast food and no grocery or full-line convenience store within walking distance.
- The rooms could benefit from a little more natural light; i.e., another set of windows.

My family stayed here for 2 nights and booked the “Nickelodeon Your Stay” package. My 2 young kids were very excited to get their Spongebob activity bag. Main reason for our stay here was to visit South Coast Plaza, which is not too far from the hotel (head onto Bear St. and you’ll be at the mall in no time!)

The hotel is in a great location, near the 405, 73, and 55 freeways. Also went to another shopping center called Fashion Island in Newport Beach, which was only about 15 minutes away. If you're looking for a little R&R, Bodycentre Spa is just down the street (on Baker St). I got a hot stone massage there and it was very relaxing!

The check-in process was quick, we arrived into town early and was able to do early check-in. There is plenty of parking around the hotel. There is complimentary daily buffet breakfast and newspaper in the lobby. The hotel room was spacious enough for 2 adults and 2 kids. The kitchen was equipped with appliances, pots, plates, utensils, paper towel, etc. (If you plan to hand wash dishes, I recommend bringing dish soap and sponge.)

I would love to visit South Coast Plaza again in the future. Next time, our family will definitely stay here again!

While I liked everything else about this hotel..... the rooms were a big disappointment!! Way too dirty!! especially the carpets. My little grandson's feet were "black" from walking aroung barefoot!! YUCK!!! Also, the rooms need more than just a "top dusting"!! Cobwebs abound on high light fixtures. An there was just alot of dust on everything that was above eye level. Too bad!!

I stayed in this hotel 3 times in the past 3 years. It's truely away from home hotel. First, the management and the staff and I mean all staff working in this hotel are extremly nice, warm and helpfull. The location and suits facilities are very convenient. I really enjoyed the hospitalities of Marriott, but this one is really different.

We have stayed here at least a dozen times in the past 18 years. The Penthouse Suite fits our family of 5 perfectly. It is not fancy but they do keep it updated and clean. The free breakfast is extremely convenient. While it's not in a resort location, it is very convenient to South Coast Plaza, Disneyland and the Newport/Huntington coast.
