“Great dining experience in a beautiful, pleasureable setting”

My wife and I have visited Il Fornaio Italian Restaurant in Coronado, CA three times for lunch over the last few years. We own timeshare property in Carlsbad, 30 miles north of San Diego and drive down at least once during our vacation week. At Il Fornaio we always dine on the outdoor covered patio to take advantage of the seemingly always perfect weather and the view of downtown San Diego across the Bay. The waterway is always alive and entertaining with boats, from the San Diego-Coronado Ferry, to ocean-going commercial ships of all sizes and descriptions, and a wide variety of private pleasure boats as well. A wonderful selection of wines, brews, and mixed drinks available to enjoy in this setting make a great start for a delightful midday repast. Our favorite has been their really great margarita on the rocks! The menu has a full selection of terrific entrees including seafood dishes, pastas, and custom specialty pizzas. My wife particularly likes the Cristina pizza which has fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, mushrooms, and wild arugula, druzzled with truffle oil, all on a wonderful, slightly crisp thin crust. I enjoyed last time the veal scaloppine and Tuscan salad which was light and truly delicious. Prices I feel are resonable for the overall quality, service, and ambiance. Clientele appears to be couples, families, and small social groups. I would highly recommend Il Fornaio to anyone visiting in the San Diego area, where beautiful Coronado itself is certainly a must to visit!

“Great food, great view!”

Classy Italian restaurant in stylish Coronado - but reasonable prices. Lovely food, in a nice ambience. And request a table on the covered (and heated) terrace, you get a panoramic view of San Diego harbour, where there is always something going on. Fantastic!

“View steals the show.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2014 via mobile

Spent an afternoon lunch on the restaurant's patio with new friends yesterday. Our four meals, two glasses of wine and two desserts came to over $105.00 with tip. My pollo Tuscano was dry and lacking seasoning and I found the roasted potatoes barly warm and again lacking flavor. My wife had the caprese salad, three halves of roma tomatoes stacked with three small sections of mozarrella. That's it! No aged balsamic and no seasoning on the tomatoes. We have noticed that in the past three years restaurants all over America are eliminating salt. Jimmy John's Sandwich shops we were told by the store in Norfolk VA no longer allow thier frachisees to offer salt as an option. This is a bad trend. Desserts were the standard fare offered at any chain and also unexceptional.

What was exceptional however was the view of the bay and San Diego skyline beyond. However, though we did feast our eyes on our beautiful surroundings our palates when hungry. Like most other "view" restaurants this one allowed the view to overshadow the food.

“Great Dining Experience ”

We come here whenever we are in San Diego/Coronado. This time there were 4 of us, our server was outstanding. Reservations were for 6:30, we arrived a few minutes early, they took us right to our table outside. Great view of San Diego and of the military ships going in and out of the bay. Our server made some good recommendations based upon what we wanted to drink. The Lasagna Ferrarese was very good! I would also recommend the Tiramisù!
