Staying on Coronado for a week with my family of 4, including 2 children ages 7 & 10, we found Il Fornaio quite enjoyable.
Situated at the Ferry Landing with views across the bay to downtown San Diego, they offer a few seats outdoors or sit inside with the big windows and watch the ships, naval planes and helicoptors go by. There's also a pedestrian path that follows the shore.
The staff are very friendly; we had an Italian waiter from Sicilia who took wonderful care of us. The food was good, hot, and timely. I ordered the salmone with spinaci; my wife had a kale salad which she loved, and is now making at home, the kids had pasta and pizza and, of course, Il Fornaio's bread. Add a glass of house Chianti.
For Coronado, it's moderately priced. After lunch, we rode the ferry to visit the Maritime museum, walk to Seaport Village, buy some fresh cookies, take a tour on the Seal- which goes on land and sea, and finish with a bike ride along the Coronado path. A terricfic meal and day.
