“Great Service”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

I was treated to Il Fornaio on Saturday for Father's Day. Had a great time. Perfect location with a fantastic view across the bay to the the skyline of my favorite city and hometown, San Diego.
The food was very good. Each month a different region of Italy is featured and currently Liguria is being highlighted. I had Sea Bass prepared in a Ligurian style, maybe a little bit bland for my taste but very good. Though our interactions with all the staff were exceptional, who really made the evening memorable was our server, Massimo! As another reviewer mentioned, most of the staff is American but native Italian, Massimo, really succeeded in taking us back to a wonderful couple of weeks we recently spent in Italy. To maximize the enjoyment of your time at Il Fornaio I would definitely ask for his station when making your reservation.

“Always a favorite”

This restaurant is the place to go if you want a fine Italian meal in an excellent setting with views of the bay. Great place for special occasions. Can be pricey but is well worth it.

“Think Disneyworld, without Mickey”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

There is nothing wrong with restaurant. It is a canned experience. Everything is programmed to be exact, fast and the same. Ask for a seat by the widow---you will get a great view of San Diego across the Bay.

I guess we did not fit their format. First, we felt pleasantly rushed; another number to get in and out the door. Second, there were three mistakes in our order. All were corrected when we called it to their attention. Third, worst of all, the food was bland. It appeared to be geared to that taste which appealed to the most people. One quick example, I had lasagna. It had obviously been prepared well in advance (nothing wrong with that per se), but then it was topped with a bland slice of parm. A better approach would have been to grate a (higher grade) of paramagan just prior to serving. As it was served, it was a flat paste that obscured the rest of an potential flavors.

In sum, beneath a slick and efficient---even elegant---patina is a mass feeding cafeteria operation.

“Location matched the food, very nice”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

We stopped for an early dinner on a Wednesday evening and found the restaurant not very busy but that changed as the evening went on. The staff were attentive and helpful recommending the house specialties and short term regional offering. We both tried the cod and it was very good. The meal came piping hot to the table and was delicious. It is hard to make a dish flavourful to the last bit but the combinations of potatoes, cheese, olives, lightly seasoned fish and a couple of other veg and spices was excellent. My wife and I were very pleased with the meal.

The breads which were served with the meal were excellent. The only thing I could mention to improve on would be the oil and vinegar dipping sauce seemed a little flat and did not truly complement the fantastic warm breads.

The dinner including one glass of wine each was extremely reasonable for the location and service we received.

“Italian with a flare”

Good solid food. Deft service. Great atmosphere. It's upbeat, bustling, and kind of So Cal cool. Situated in Coronado and Del Mar, the whole vibe is upscale.
