The first proviso: we went to Il Fornaio on Mother's Day! What were we thinking? Well, we were hungry and we were away from home. So, it was crowded and service was slow. Our table shared the wall with the bar and there were times when we thought a helicopter was about to land on us. We looked enviously at the diners near the windows with wonderful views of the bay. Tables were added to booths to accommodate large groups and two of them were set up around us in a way that we were blocked in, but, hey, it was Mother's Day. The second proviso: we showed up 90 minutes before our reservation on Mother's Day! Again: what were we thinking? Not being completely stupid, I did call before we went early and they assured me they would be able to work us in and they succeeded after about 50 minutes. The food we chose was fine, but not particularly memorable. When I am in Coronado again, I would be willing to give it another try on a totally different day based on the other positive reviews.
