Many lovely things to say about this resort, but it is older and service was mixed. We have stayed at other Loews and service has always been exceptional. Our stay at Loews Coronado was overall a 3-4 star and not a 4-5 star stay. A few changes could really enhance this into a better resort stay. The inside of the rooms, including bath area are lovely. Our bed and linen were good quality and comfortable. Our room balcony was great to enjoy the views, but was showing signs of wear and a little dirty, especially in the corners. In room coffee is good but it is surprising there are no mugs, only styrofoam cups and the housekeeper forgot to re-supply even the styrofoam cups the 2nd day. Front desk was friendly, and was able to provide a top floor upgrade with a minimal nightly increase charge, which we thought was worth it for a great view of the Bay, Coronado Bridge and downtown SD. When I mentioned that a local family member was coming for dinner, the front desk offered an additional parking card for them to use, at no cost. Very appreciated!
We enjoyed the lobby areas, and each dining area offered many areas to sit outside or by a window and enjoy Coronado Bridge, city lights or marina with boats. We had dinner one night at Mistral ($29 for a Chefs 3 course meal, with choices for each course) - the food was excellent and service from Rene was also exceptional. The Chef came by our table and made sure we were enjoying the meal. Wonderful. We dined and met friends several times in the Cay's Lounge which had good food, but mixed service. When we sat inside service was prompt, yet not rushed. When we were outside we waited 15-20 minutes each time to get served, and once we had to go find a server. One time a server helped several guests at tables around us, and walked by, but completely overlooked us. The worst service occurred during breakfast one morning at the Market Restaurant. After being seated, it was a full 15-20 minute wait until the waitress even came by, and when she did, I don't recall her even offering a greeting or anything, she just stood there waiting to take an order and she didn't offer any information about the buffet option, the weekend $7 Mimosa special, etc. Upon check-in we were given information about some dining specials/options (such as the 3 Course Chef Special dinner and the weekend buffet), but when we asked the server she seemed annoyed and said "Oh, ya, I guess it is the weekend, isn't it?". After ordering, it took another 10 minutes to get coffee. After that, for another 45 minutes the server never came by. There were no offers of coffee refills. No water refill. Nothing. The tables adjacent had another server and they had the waiter check on them regularly to see if they needed anything, so I think this was server specific and not reflective of the entire restaurant. When our waitress finally came to the table, we were not done eating, and we were still waiting for our 1st coffee refill, but instead of her asking if we needed anything else or how the food was, she quickly dropped off the check and turned to leave (not saying anything). As she was leaving I nicely asked for a coffee refill. She didn't reply, just turned and left. A few minutes later (one hour into the buffet breakfast meal), I finally got a refill after asking another server for more coffee. Loews should invest some time training servers at the Market and Cays Lounge to be more attentive within reasonable periods of time, and certainly offer coffee and water refills. Even if they are busy when guests first arrive, they should quickly come by and greet guests with a "Welcome (or Hello). I will be with you in a few moments, here is a menu to look at".
Pool service was exceptional and the server was friendly. Other guests at the pool were also commenting on what a great server she was (I wish I could remember her name). We didn't use the spa, but friends had wonderful things to say about the spa treatments they received. There is a nice bike/walking path to the beach, but this particular beach is just okay with some trash and washed up clothes, goggles, etc. along the shoreline. We are very familiar with the local San Diego beaches, and this is probably our least favorite. This beach is fine for walking if you are staying at the hotel, but if you want to spend a day at the beach enjoying the sand, and swimming or surfing, it would be worth it to drive north and choose another beach.
We enjoyed lunch at the Del one day, which is always fun to visit. These two hotels are very different. The Del has lots of people and lots of activity, whereas Loews has a more tranquil atmosphere and less hustle and bustle. The Del is within walking distance of restaurants, nice beaches and shopping. Loews is about 4 miles south and has bay & city views with a boat marina which provides great water activities (kayaking, fishing, boating, jet ski, etc.). We especially enjoyed the firepits at night with the Coronado Bridge and San Diego lights in the distance. And, Loews accepts dogs if that is important to you. We saw lots of dogs during our stay, but didn't hear any at night.
