Looming off the main drag on the charming island of Coronado, a 15 minute drive from San Diego, is The Hotel del Coronado. A brick red roof adorns the Victorian style resort that has graced the shores of Coronado since the 1880's, when it was built it was the largest resort in the world, it no longer claims that title, but it is and remains, one of the great hotels on the planet. It's beautiful, sits on acres of the shoreline, The Del, as it is known to residents and visitors, is one of my favorite destinations. There are several lodging areas within The Del, the main building, the original structure and a short walk to their cabana section which is built around the Olympic sized pool, several condo type towers are adjacent and a recent addition, their Beach Village. I often stay in the rooms around the pool which gives you easy access to the beach and the well manicured grounds.
The staff at The Del are well schooled in guest service and dozens of shops and dinning spots are on the property, then there are more outlets lining the streets of the town minutes away.
I never let much time pass between visits to The Del, always a delight and I hope it remains for another 125 years.More
