This grand hotel in the town of Coronado offers outstanding accommodations. Located on the beach, it is ideal for a romantic getaway, a family vacation or a professional meeting. The rooms are comfortable, but not outstanding. In the older part of the hotel, the walls between the rooms are a bit thin so you are aware of neighbors. If you have creaky knees like me, there are not many elevators. There is a charming brass elevator in the lobby with a real elevator operator. The restaurants are outstanding, especially if you can dine outside. For meeting functions, the food service was excellent. The meeting rooms are very nice and, if the speaker is boring, you can look out over the ocean and day dream.

Thank you for your kind endorsement and we are thrilled that you appreciate the historic nuances that make The Del so special. The elevator in the lobby is the original, Otis #61, and does require an operator. We hope your travels bring you back this way again.

Stayed here for a conference. My room was in one of the newer buildings, and they do not have any interior connection. It was clean, spacious enough, bathroom was nice and it smelled fine, to answer some of the recent criticisms (OK, location overlooking parking lot/ walkway was a little noisy), but really my room could have been in any nice hotel in the US. The charm and history of the Del is the Victorian building, and I saw no more of that than any tourist off the street, and as a paying guest with limited free time enjoyed no other advantages. (Anyone can walk on their beach, eat at their expensive restaurants, buy their endless souveniers etc and October isn't the time to use a pool.) However, I paid the prices you'd expect for a National Historic Landmark. Yes, the Victorian section cost more-- but my room was not THAT much less.
Glorietta Bay and La Avinida are right across the (busy) street from the Del; I actually would have had a shorter walk to the conference rooms if I had stayed at either of them, and while I have no personal knowledge of them (but you can check the TripAdvisor reviews) they are deifinitely cheaper.
Bottom line- unless you are there for a true resort stay where you plan to utilize all the amenities and hotel activities (and plan to pay the extra costs for them), is it really worth an extra $100 a day (plus $33/day parking) just to be able to say you stayed at the Del, instead of next to it?

We appreciate your comments and are pleased that you had the opportunity to stay at this iconic resort. We believe that we have something for everyone—from the historic charm of the 125-year old Victorian Building to the more spacious and contemporary Ocean Towers and California Cabanas—but all of our rooms are priced according to room type, not the individual buildings themselves. Thank you for your input and we hope your travels bring you back our way again.

The Del was very good. A quaint old fashioned hotel. We had rooms in the old building with sea views and the views were wonderful. Smores on the beach (at a price that is not really good value) was a super experience. The beach location, yet within 10 minutes of downtown San Diego cannot be beaten. Yes, some of the room features could do with an update and some things are overpriced but I thouroughly enjoyed my stay and would return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the victorian building

We had a very nice stay here. We ended up with a huge suite facing the interior courtyard of the main building. The room had been recently redone and was beautiful and very comfortable. The lobby area of the hotel is really unique and worth checking out even if you're not staying here. The beach is also beautiful. One complaint is that the public areas are very very crowded with tourists during the day, as the hotel is open to all. Extras at the hotel are pricey, as is the parking. One final note is that Coronado is a ways from downtown SD, so this might not be the most convenient place to stay if you plan a lot of trips into the city. Overall a really unique hotel experience and worth trying out.

Room Tip: We had a large room facing the courtyard of the main building, which was very nice.

My wife and I just completed a five night stay at the Hotel del. It was as totally as expected. The basic structure is aging well. Our room was not modern, but we did not expect modern. The slanted floors, oddly spaced steps, too-short handrails, faded carpets all added positively to the experience. The room and the property was clean. Service was A-1. The location is unbeatable, and the beach offered a bee-hive of interesting activity, including military helicopter exercises, naval vessels arriving, weddings and basic tourism.

Happily, we found basic systems, sometimes a problem in older properties, effective. Heating, cooling, hot water, etc. were all effective, quiet and easy to manage. The bed was comfortable, and street noise while always present was not horrible.

It's not cheap. While our room was reasonably priced, everything else demanded a premium. Coffee, beers, meals, the Sunday brunch, parking were all quite expensive. $15 margaritas. On the other hand, the basic internet package was complimentary. The good news, its not hard to find dining, drinking and other opportunities in the town of Coronado for much more reasonable prices.

Periodic private functions occurred while we were there, mostly business functions, taking portions of the property off-limits and adding a lot of foot traffic, and creating some internal dissonance - we at times felt under dressed!

We had a city view room. I cannot say we missed the ocean view, and we saved quite a bit of money. As other reviewers noted, it's better to watch the sunset from the beach anyway.

Room Tip: While on an upper floor, our room looked over a staging - delivery area. We were woken a couple of...
