“If you like historic, character-filled (but pricey) hotels...”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

I was here for a meeting over a long weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it but agree with many of the caveats mentioned by previous reviewers. It is a "destination" hotel - not one from which to base a trip to San Diego.

Pros: My room was spacious and updated tastefully with huge window onto part beach/part parking lot. The public spaces (lobby, front elevator, courtyard garden, ballroom, etc.) are beautiful and I found myself slowing down to admire them often Service was friendly and professional. Hotel shops are step above usual fare, especially in concourse below hotel. Gorgeous beach and sunsets. Food uniformly good - especially the upscale restaurant. We easily rented bikes on the beachfront of the hotel and did a wonderful ride around the island - highly recommend. We also watched some sort of practice rescue operation in front of the hotel involving a hovering helicopter, men and a raft - interesting to watch. (I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the morning jog of aforementioned naval personnel...)

Pro/ Con depending on your opinion: Being historic the hotel has characteristics that will charm/vex you - small elevators, long and winding hallways, confusing floor plans, some smaller bathrooms.

Cons: It is expensive - even at the casual spots within the hotel. And room quality can vary dramatically - from a quirky, romantic but tiny turret room, to a spacious picture-window room to the coveted beach-facing, terraced rooms, and many more I didn't view. The noticeable influx of tourists, not guests, during the weekend days is a bit bothersome but certainly understandable given the landmark status of the place. The casual bar closest to the ocean had very slow service at happy hour - they needed at least two more bartenders on hand.

Overall: Beautiful unique hotel on a gorgeous beach worth the splurge.

Room Tip: Rooms vary considerably - try to view some before deciding.

Know what this is: A historic, grand hotel from a bygone era on one of the largest sand beaches in San Diego.

Coronado is a peninsula that is accessed from the city of San Diego via a vast bridge. You would come to this hotel for a vacation where you desire a huge beach and fun amenities. Unlike other beaches in the US, San Diego has few family beaches where you can run and have fun and enjoy a big resort - this is one of those places.

TRANSPORTATION TIP: By the way, don't stay here and plan to run around San Diego - the bridge makes driving difficult during rush, and a taxi to the gaslamp will run you $20. The train here takes you to Old Town only, and you will need a bus transfer. Yes, there is a ferry, but it is almost 2 MILES from the hotel. They claim there is a water taxi but it will only come there if you have 5 people and schedule WAY WAY in advance (235-TAXI) and travel between 3-10.

So if you have your own car, and avoid traffic and don't mind the extra 15 minutes added onto everywhere you go, then you are in business. I'd suggest coming here, staying for 3 or 4 days, then finding a more northern and cheap hotel for your other adventures in SD like parks and zoo (e.g., Hotel Circle )

If you come, you will be delighted. There are tons of restaurants and really the largest sand beach I've seen. It takes 5 minutes of walking in sand to get from the boardwalk to the water.

The hair salon is awesome (ask for Carrie, she did a great job with my locks), and the spa is fairly nice, but more for people who are NOT staying there and want access to a shower for the day. The spa was pretty small and standard, which surprised me since it says it's rated top in the US.

The food is good, the "Sun Deck" was great and the Ocean 1500 was pretty good. They have a ton of shops and ice cream and candy places. It's just generally fun.

Come prepared to lay down a ton of cash. Nothing about Coronado is cheap. If you are on the "island", be prepared to pay for everything about double of what you expect back home.

But, for the grand old beauty and amazing beach, it's worth it. You are getting what you pay for.

TIP: If you don't know already, San Diego is COLD. Yes, it can be hot and warm in the Sun during peak hours. But the water is ALWAYS freezing (e.g., people over 18 rarely swim in there without a wetsuit).
Because the water is freezing, there is almost always a cool breeze and a marine layer that blocks out the sun in the AM. So, even in the summer, it gets quite cool here (50-60's in the evening with the cold breeze).

TIP2: San Diego is south, and closer to the sun than you'd think. You will get burned fast. Wear a hat even when it is overcast or be prepared for a red nose and burned cheeks. For kids, buy long-sleeved UV rash shirts. it's cool enough they won't care. It's SO easy to burn here and moles mutate faster here. So, cover up!

TIP3: They have a great, amazing, Sunday brunch that is famous. It's part of the experience so plan around this. It's costly but good.

Room Tip: There are several different areas. Be sure to UNDERSTAND which one is which and review your choices...

First room was a cheaper room and it litterally faced the back side of a roof. It was dark and small, the second room was a bigger room that faced a courtyard on the ground floor, that was quaint and lovely. The last room we stayed in was on the second floor of the main building and faced the ocean. In the morning we watched a bird handler bring out 6 or 7 falcons and hawks to keep the stray seagulls away as guests enjoyed there breakfast. I was amazing! I truly love this hotel and it will be an annual visit. If you can afford it, splurge a couple grand on a room with a beach view for the weekend. The energy, the "vibe", whatever you want to call it is there. I love this hotel! xoxo

Great older character hotel, 125th anniversary in 2013. Lots of Marilyn Munroe/Tony Curtis/Jack Lemmon memorabilia from when the movie "Some Like it Hot" was shot there in 1959. The original Otis elevators #61, #62 and #63 are still working on the premises. History buffs will love the stories of famous guests that have stayed there and the many pictures of how the hotel and surrounding area was built. Make sure you enjoy a pizza and cheese plate at ENO's. Rooms are a bit pricey but for nostalgia buffs it can be a great adventure.

Room Tip: Rooms under the "Sun Deck" are closest to the ocean with the best views.

Whilst on vacation in San Diego we drove over to the Del especially to have lunch. We got a table outside at the Sheerwater without trouble. Very attentive staff as you would expect at this class of hotel. We had a salad and a BBQ pork sandwich, which were very good. Great cocktails.
Despite the hawks they use, beware the marauding seagulls raiding tables!
An expensive lunch, but well worth it.

Absolutely stunning hotel with great customer service. The only reason this is not a 5 star review is because the hotel is a tourist stop on Coronado, which means that the grounds / restaurants are full of people not staying at the hotel. Rooms were great for the age, staff were all courteous, food was average and overpriced ($25 for Embassy Suites style breakfast). Highly recommend just for the ambience!

My husband and I just celebrated our 43rd wedding anniversary at the Hotel del Coronado. This was our 7th vacation at 'The Del' and it was fabulous. When making our reservation, the woman informed us of the two nights plus one night free special. We decided to reserve an oceanfront executive suite with covered balcony. It was worth every penny. We spent so many hours watching the waves and the activities below while reading or just relaxing. What a perfect spot! The gentleman at check-in was so helpful and our room was ready!!! We asked for Jose in Sheerwater for the breakfast buffet because he was terrific. Loved our waiter Sebastian at 1500 Ocean. We rented the surrey topped bicycle to ride around along the sidewalks near 'The Del'. The fitness room was full but well equipped. We had a terrific meal off the property at Chez Loma. We love, love 'The Del'! The complimentary bottle of wine for our anniversary was a lovely gesture.

Room Tip: A full oceanfront view room with balcony is worth the money.
