While this was a spa vacation to a local resort (a stay-cation) it was worth every penny. I left the Del feeling rested and relaxed and refreshed. I had the spa package with a full ocean view and ended up with a room on the first floor, so close to the water. I could almost spit on the sand, I was so close. I could see the waves crashing on shore and, at nighttime, could lay in bed and listen to the waves.
The spa part of the vacation was lovely. The public areas of the spa itself are fairly small (this hotel was not built as a spa resort after all), but they are comfortable. The individual rooms are lovely and quiet, and the infinity pool (for spa guest only so NO CHILDREN) was lovely. The attendants are very attentive and friendly, and the therapists definitely enjoy working at the Del.
Because I'm a vegetarian, I had a bit of a problem with dinner at Sheerwater, even though I had made a reservation weeks ago and had confirmed I wanted something special the evening I had dinner. Eventually, after sending the waiter back to talk to the chef several times, I ended up with lovely meal that consisted of two side dishes and a "comes with" (the sweet corn risotto that "comes with" a seafood dish). I was a bit disappointed that I kept getting told I could have a quinoa burger or stir fried veg or a salad, when the menu is more deluxe than that for non-vegetarians. (My pet peeve anywhere... please don't throw a salad or something random and boring and call it a vegetarian meal. Make MY meal as special as any one's, please.)
Wednesday evenings, Eno (the wine bar), has a lovely half-price cheese flight special, and it was really REALLY lovely. Quite a lot of food, enough to bring back to the room and enjoy for lunch the next day along with fruit.
My room was in the California Cabanas, ground level, with a patio. It was a lovely location to sit and sip coffee in the morning, or an after dinner drink in the evening. This time of the year (early May) the beach was not crowded and it was relatively quiet and peaceful. The room was quite large and pleasantly decorated, and included bathrobes, refrigerator, and a coffee maker (and other standard amenities such as a room safe, iron, blow dryer).
The main pool area is large and attended to by friendly attendants. Overall, the rest of the grounds are lovely and once I oriented myself, it was lovely to walk around and enjoy the property, talk to the falconers (who help with bird abatement, keeping the sea gulls away), enjoy the sunshine...
But, the intent of the trip was a spa vacation at the beach, and that is exactly what I got. I was able to walk along the beach at sunrise and sunset (and watch whales cavorting), enjoy the sea air and listen to the waves crashing on shore, and just RELAX!!!
Really, the best spa vacation I've had. And worth every single penny I spent!!!
