Been to this hotel for biz 2x in the past 3 years. Every time, prepare for long wait to check in with claims the "computers are slow". If your placed in the tower next to the hotel, prepare to sleep in a dirty, musty, room with on-off tv reception. Food and other services are actually quite good. For the price- go to Lowes down the road 5 miles... modern and nice.

When I say Disneyland, I don't mean than in a good way. HUGE crowds around the grounds, and the food in every restaurant was horrible. We stayed at the hotel for 2 days and ate every meal there, going to every restaurant they have, and the pool bar as well. In today's world, where there are so many great restaurants, how can a place that charges $400/night for a room have terrible food? Ridiculous!!! We won't go back b/c of this.

I thought this was supposed to be an amazing, fancy resort hotel. My room in the main building was small and old-fashioned, with thick old carpeting, two empty old fridges that would have looked more at home at a dump, recycling facility, or yard sale, one fridge behind closed doors of a bureau, another free-standing. All this would have been fine if only things were CLEAN. But no. When I tried to open the shutters to close the windows (because I had just lowered the thermostat for the A/C to come on so the room wouldn't be 8000 degrees), there were HUGE DUST CLUMPS on the windows. I mean, come on. Seriously?! The alarm clock was dirty and crusted over with crud. And there was no instruction as to how to set the alarm. A leather desk pad on the desk was old and worn and grimy. The phones felt dusty. Was I at Miss Havisham's?? The hotel main lobby and ballroom was very poorly air-conditioned. It was SO HOT in there. Ugh.

I wasn't the only one who experienced this and felt this way. A friend of mine said the same thing of her room. She and her husband immediately asked for a room change, and apparently there is a new wing with newer and more modern rooms. And those are the rooms featured on their website. Talk about discrimination. How do they decide who to put in which kind of a room, if the guests are paying the same amount of money? But another friend of mine staying in one of those more modern rooms still said it was just eh, so-so.

(And then there's Megan at the front desk. Beware of Megan. She'll give you the look of death and treat you less well than the last guest if you don't find favor in her eyes. Not sure why. Maybe she missed orientation and training when she first started in the **hospitality** business. But this didn't figure into my rating of the hotel because maybe this was an aberration and a momentary lapse attributable to a bad week for her. I am trying to give things benefit of the doubt.)

Room Tip: Ask about another hotel in the area.

We were fortunate enough to be able to stay at the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island following a conference that I was attending for work. We were there at the end of August through Labor Day. I had always wanted to stay here, but figured that it was unlikely due to the cost. It's expensive, but the hotel permitted us to extend our stay after the conclusion of the conference at the same very low daily rate (less than half the regular rate). We rented a car and self-parking was gratis with the room.

The rooms are big and although not modern in the main hotel, they reflect the victorian era in which the hotel was built. We had two huge walk in closets, a large chest of drawers, lots of wood hangars and thick white terry robes. The bathroom was smallish, but certainly ample enough for each of us. There was a flat screen tv with a keyboard and a gaming option.

The movie "Some Like it Hot" with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon was filmed here and the glamorousness of old stardom permeates the whole place. It was built in 1888 and one can just imagine the wealthy barons of business bringing their wives and families here at the turn of the 20th century.

The interior of the hotel is all dark shiny wood with beautiful dramatic lighting. The elevator is original and is run by an operator, which was really fun for my 8 year old. The stairwells and hallways are very wide.

They have two pools, we made it to one. It goes from 3 to 4.5 feet in depth and is perfect for kids. It's heated, so the San Diego breeze doesn't get to you. They give you nice fluffy towels to dry off and there are lots of chairs, chaises and tables with umbrellas. The other pool is restricted to adults. There are also chairs and towels that you can get to go lie on the beach, which is just an incredible beach. The sand is soft and the beach is clean and uncrowded.

There are several restaurants and places to get food and drink along the rear of the hotel. You can enjoy your food and drink by the pool or by the beach, from casual to elegant.

They also have a lot of food and drink related activities. We went to a wine tasting on the back patio one evening. We were served little sips of 10 different types of wine - 5 whites and 5 reds. We were given a map of all the different wines with a description of their origin and their characteristics.

There is a very nice fitness center with weight machines, dumbbells and cardio machines. They also offer fitness classes including yoga on the beach in the morning. The gym was nice and clean. There is a spa, which I never made it to.

The concierge was so helpful and friendly. We were assisted by two women there who were wonderful. We purchased tickets to local attractions at a discount and were helped with restaurant recommendations, also providing us with a coupon for a gratis appetizer at at a very nice restaurant in the Gaslight Quarter.

Housekeeping is exceptional. Our room was cleaned well daily and the bathroom was spotless. The beds were so fresh everyday. It really felt like a new room each day.

There are lovely shops inside the lower level of the hotel, including an ice cream and a candy shop. The ice cream was delicious!

There are lots of activities for everyone - there are special spa services, a kids area with arcade games and other activities - they even have surfing lessons for the kids. I guess the idea is that parents can leave their kids for a while to pursue other activities. We never made it there as we wanted to take our son to see the sights of San Diego.

One of the nicest things about the hotel is that, without exception, from the time I made the reservation on the telephone to the day we left, every person on the staff was welcoming, friendly and helpful. Everyone smiled, engaged us in conversation and wanted to make sure that we were happy and satisfied. The level of service was excellent.

The food at the hotel is excellent. I had several meals there, continental breakfast and lunches during the conference. The lunches were excellent - the salad was fresh and the dressings light. Chicken was so moist and flavorful. This was banquet food, but was probably the best banquet serving I have ever had.

There are a lot of great restaurants near the hotel within walking distance. We ate breakfast at Clayton's every day - $30 for three people for a filling delicious breakfast. The hotel has a buffet breakfast for $25, and it looked fabulous with lots of fresh fruit. The hotel has its own herb garden, as well as a flower and plant garden with identifying markers.

We ate dinner one night at Miguel's, one or two blocks away, and had great margueritas and buritos and fajitas. The food was excellent.

There's a pasta place called Island Pasta - they make their own pasta and we had rigatoni with meatballs and vegetable lasagna and the pasta was delicious. The marinara sauce was fresh and flavorful and filled with chunks of tomato and fresh herbs.

We saw the local sights - the Midway, SD Zoo and Sea World. I will review those elsewhere.

Room Tip: It depends what you prefer. If you must have the most modern accommodations, then you don't wan...

We have been going to The Del for about 12 years and it just gets better and better. It's not cheap, but it's such a magical place that we make room in our budget for it. Don't forget to give your regards to Kate while you're there.

After staying at the 4 star Hyatt in Orange County for 7 nights we stayed here 3 nights this past weekend. As a family we were impressed with the beach and the pool and that was about it. We were a late arrival and when we got there it seemed like something out of a haunted house movie. My daughter and I were the only ones in the lobby with the graveyard bell person. We finally had to ask him if the front desk was open, after 5 minutes she appeared, she was at the washroom. She quickly gave us our keys to the "Beach Towers" and we were on our way with a map. It was a weird welcome at a "Luxury Resort" if I must say. The beach towers are NOT four stars. The glass doors had handrprints all over them, the ellevator doors as well and the carpet is all worn. When we got to the room I wanted to use the fridge and couldn't. There was mold in the fridge and it smelled horrible. There was a big coffee stain infront of the TV, the room smelled musty and my girls found a pair of socks under one of the beds while looking for their toy and htey weren't daddy's. We stayed in the room as ittle as possible which was a shame. I let houskeeping know about the fridge, it was cleaned out but it still stinks....my husband didn't like the beachtowers at all and the next day I asked about moving to the big main hotel. We were put on a wait list and when the front desk called the next day we were at the beach to say the new room was ready. They didn't give us a timeline to work with so we stayed at the beach for 1 hr. They later called saying that we couldn't change rooms anymore because we took too long and so they gave it to another guest....are you kidding me? Anyways I was choked and so we ended up spending 3 nights in a musty, dirty carpet/fridge room and stained bed throw. Upon chekcing out I mentioned those things to the front desk and received no apology, or discount on anything they just said that they would take note. So it seems that this must be common complaint in the beach towers? I can't comment on the main hotel as I didn't get a chance to stay there. So like I said if you compare apples to oranges the Beach Towers accomodation and Front desk are not 4 stars. It's more like a 3 stars. The beach was great though I must give them credit for that.

Room Tip: Room 6310, not a clean room when we stayed
