Eight of us (4 adults, kids - 12, 13, 16, 16) were scheduled for an all day trip. Zephyr called us to say that they were concerned about the water being too much for the younger two kids. The water was running high & fast (13K CFS). They recommended that we switch to the 1/2 day trip (faster water was on second part of the trip) and would credit us for the difference. The 12 year old and one adult decided not to go & Zephyr automatically took the charges for these 2 off of my credit card. Zephyr also tested each of our swimming abilities (if you failed, Zephyr said that it would refund the $). Zephyr put safety BEFORE $!

As for the trip, a guide was in each boat and exceptionally skilled at having us enjoy the whitewater (but missing the areas that may be too much for us to handle). Jimmy (good to see some gray, experience, & talked to us before the trip), Jason (talked us the days before the trip about the water level), & Paul (our guide) were excellent before, during, & after the trip. The two ladies, Cris & Vicky, who we talked to on the phone were also very knowledgeable & friendly.

Finally, you don't need to bring a (water) camera on the trip! A photographer follows you from the road and takes tons of photos (I was expecting only 1-2 shots). You can buy a CD of the photos right next to Zephyr. The cost was $40, which I think was a great value...we bought one & I think all of the other groups did too...lots of laughter viewing them at the shop.

The only regret was deciding not to go on the full-day trip. Maybe next time.

This company really understands how to treat the customer. From the day we made the reservation to the end of our rafting trip, we were made to feel as if it was their priority to make sure we walked away happy. The rafting trip was phenomenal. Our guide, Mike, did his job in making sure we understood what was expected of us on the river not only to have fun, but stay safe. He kept the conversations going, providing information about the river and the surrounding areas. If ever in the area, we would absolutely do this again.

My review would sound exactly the same as Vegasheidi's below. We also had Ashley as our guide and she was great. It was a thrilling and exciting adventure even though we hadn't ever been whitewater rafting before. If you are in the area definitely book a trip with Zephyr.

We booked the one day Merced river trip online in May 2011. It was easy to book online and they sent good instructions right away. When we showed up on the day of the trip we were outfitted with all the gear including wetsuits, wool sweaters, splash jackets, helmets, and heavy life vests. They went over safety ad even practiced a little in the river before heading out. Rapids were mostly 2s and 3s with a couple if 4s. We felt very safe with our competent guide Ashley. There were about 7 boats during our trip with 6 in a boat. Lunch was good with sandwiches, cookies, fruit, and lemonade. In the water time was about 5 hours with an hour for lunch. Water was cold but not unbearable in the boat with the wet suit on. I would recommend wet suit boots to keep your feet warmer. At the end you buy a CD of pics of your boat. $50 for about 70 pics. Great trip. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

My family and I had such an amazing time with the guys at Zephyr - we have two boys, 13 and 10 and only my husband had rafted before; our guide, Dave-O, was so experienced and looked after us all really well - he knew the river like the back of his hand. The trip down the river was so safe, professional and, most of all, great fun.
We rafted the Kings River, south of Yosemite - (1.5 hrs from Fresno) and stayed at the campsite for two nights. We went at the beginning of August which is out of the usual season but possible due to higher than average snowfall the previous winter.
The staff was so friendly and efficient, the place ran like clockwork and the food was fantastic - for vegetarians (me) too!
We went on the two-day trip and loved every minute - our ten year old now wants to be a white water rafting instructor when he's grown up!!
I have nothing but positives to say about this company - it was great for our family but would be just as good for corporate groups, team-building expeds, hen/stag weekends etc.
We did start to wonder whether we were going to the right place on the drive in as it's a little remote - remember to fill up at a petrol (gas) station as nowhere to fill up for quite a distance; also - if camping the night before your trip, take food for that evening; river shoes were invaluable too - $5 in Target/Walmart; remember to take a torch, too.
Well worth the money - we had a fab time.
