“Fun, Exciting and just enough relaxing”
Reviewed July 26, 2012

The river was nice and cold perfect during the summer. This run has just enough exciting rapids to challenge. You might fall out of the boat but you never feel like you're in immanent danger. A great run for first timers and children 8+. You can also jump out and swim many times or ride a couple of rapids without the boat. Lots of fun!

“Whitewater Rafting”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

Guide "Dave" was great for our group. Entire raft was family and very adventurous and he didn't let us down. Wished there were more rapids. This is a good beginners river.

“Fourth of July with my feet in the river!”
Reviewed July 13, 2012

Right around the corner from Coloma, with it's great State Park and Historic site is the little town of Lotus. Named for the "Lotus Eaters" of the Odyssey (who ate of the Lotus and didn't want to ever leave the beautiful land they had found) this little town on the South Fortk of the American River lives up to its name. The surrounding hills were golden, covered with oaks and pines and full of birds and other wildlife. The contrast of the cool deep blue river and the sun-warmed air made it a breathtaking scene.

My husband and I spent the day near Henningson Park with our lawn chairs in the water, just reading and watching the world go by. The river is pretty tame in this area and the passing rafts were varied, some in quiet contemplation and some water-fighting with other boats. We were near a rafting pull out point and heard excited talk and laughter about the harrowing whitewater upstream.

On our way home, we stopped in at the All Outdoors Whitewater Rafting headquarters just down the road and watched the guides hosing off readying their rafts for the next aventure. They explained that the South Fork is a beginner to intermediate level river, suitable for all and their prices seemed quite reasonable. They even have a beginner rafting trip talored to children and families called the "Tom Sawyer Adventure" which like all of their trips, includes a buffet lunch in the "wilderness".

Don't bypass beautiful, quiet Lotus, California when visiting the gold country on a hot summer day...and bring your lawn chair.

“It's never too hot to raft”
Reviewed June 9, 2012

Not all river rafting is rapids and wild. Sometimes you just want to rent a kayak and meander down the smooth river at its own pace. Don't think you have to be a sports-a-holic to cruise the river. If you can swim, you can raft--and bring your mother. But, if you want rapids and adventure, there are many rafting tours who will ferry you down and bring you home. The river is beautiful and full of fun for everyone. Come and cool off.
