“Wonderful Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2008

We had a wonderful stay at the Shelford House. We were there for only one night, but it was perfect. The views from the front porch are breathtaking. Our room was cozy and had everything that we needed for a comfortable night's rest. Anna, the innkeeper, provided a delicious breakfast using local fresh fruits, breads and eggs. She was a wonderful resource for planning a drive through the surrounding area.

We would highly reccommend the Shelford House.

We just returned from the Shelford House - a 2-night stay for a special occasion. We live around 90-miles away from the inn/area, and have stayed in other places in Sonoma County many times over the years. This was our first visit to the Shelford House.

Anna and Stan and their staff do an awesome job to make everyone feel comfortable. We'd read all the tripadvisor reviews before booking.

Our fellow travelers were from various places, but several of them were celebrating occasions --- birthdays (us), anniversaries, and a honeymoon couple. Some had come from the SF Bay Area and others from further. It was a good group.

Anna and Stan make everyone feel comfortable and seem to have an inate sense about people. I think Anna has ears in the back of her head as I said something (not too loud) about the difference between fritatta and quiche and she answered me from across the house. They are very attuned to their guests.

The rooms are absolutely impeccable, as is their service. I think I'll call Anna the "constant cookie queen." She's always making cookies. Nothing is wanting in the rooms either. We stayed in the Sarah room (small, in the Carriage House) but we spent much of the time just relaxing and reading, even though there is a TV and other things in the parlor in the Carriage House which we could have used, but didn't.

The Sarah room was perfect for reading and relaxing as it had great lighting and we each had our own wing-back chair to read for hours. We loved it!

We arrived on a rainy Friday night, and the only thing we were missing was a place to slice the bread and cheese we'd brought. They had the wine bottle opener, the cookies, the water in the fridge in the Carriage House. Everything!

As others have said, the towels are incredibly fluffy, there are bathrobes, the ambiance and scenery is awesome (on the edge of a vineyard), the Carriage House even seems Victorian (though it's not that old).

Our only issue (as others have said) is that the traffic on River Road (right under the windows of the Sarah Room) can be noisy but the innkeepers make no bones about this. They can't control it and it's not their fault. But, they do provide "industrial grade" earplugs in the unit --- part of the package, which is wonderful. Soaps, shampoos, bath salts and a huge wonderful bottle of lotion. Great stuff!

Don't get me wrong on the traffic. It's not all day long. But, periodically a car or truck will go down that road close to the house and you can hear it and it could disturb your sleep, if noise bothers you at night. I sleep through noise but maybe others can't.

Also, I took my SO for his birthday dinner on Saturday night to Piacere Risotorante Italiano on No. Cloverdale Blvd. It's a wonderful small family restaurant . Our food was wonderful (raviolis for the birthday guy and linguini with clams for me) but it was very crowded on a Saturday night. I thought maybe we would have to wait to be seated or served. Everything was very efficient --- service was swift and excellent. I highly recommend that restaurant.

I can't say enough positive about Shelford House and our experience over this restorative long week-end, including the wineries we visited in the Dry Creek Valley appelation (Dutcher Creek, Bella, Quivira) and the wonderful Italian restaurant in Cloverdale.

Enjoy.

When we saw the picture on the web site, it immediately prompted us to call for more information. We were not disappointed. We travel a lot and our expectations are pretty high when it comes to lodging. The place was exactly in person as the pictures had shown on the web site. This was our first experience at a Bed and Breakfast and it was pure joy from booking the reservation, arriving at the Shelford House and having wonderful conversation at breakfast with Anna and Stan and their guests. Our plan was to tour wine country and stay some place very clean, relaxing and cozy. We chose the Vineyard Retreat. WOW! The place was so inviting and very clean. We were right on a vineyard with a gorgeous view overlooking Lavendar gardens and other beautiful scenery. We both desire to visit again during the summer months or fall harvest. Breakfasts were all quite pleasing to the palate and yet so simple making us wonder?? Why don't we fix this? These people truly enjoy greeting others and offering lots of information on things to do in the area as well as some lovely wineries and tempting wines. Very enjoyable!! From Indiana

This is a great B&B! Stan and Anna take great pride in the upkeep, amenities and food (delicious breakfast both mornings). We stayed 2 nights while touring the Sanoma wine country. Cloverdale is a great location for this. It's a quiet setting with a nice river walk within .5 miles of the B&B. We highly recommend it.

After a few stops along the wine road, we made our way to The Shelord House in Cloverdale. Upon check-in, Anna offered beverages and made us feel like we were at an old friends house. We gota brief tour and were amazed when we opened the door to the most beautiful room. The doors off the back balcony opened to a panoramic view of Alexander Valley where we enjoyed an amazing bottle of local Zinfandel. the mext morning Anna served us homemeade blueberry stuffed french toast and for dessert, rum cake. I was in Heaven. Not only were Stan and Anna gracious hosts, but they also sent us to the best restaurants and wineries while we stayed in Cloverdale. We WILL be back next year for our Anniversary and would be sure to recommend friends.

This was the 2nd stop (after San Francisco) on our 30th anniversary trip to California on our way down the Pacific Coast Highway. What a wonderful choice we made! The Shelford House lived up to its top notch reputation on Trip Advisor! It was so beautiful and serene, out in the country surrounded by vineyards! We stayed in the Vera room which was very spacious. The bed was luxuriously comfortable and the ceiling fan helped to circulate that wonderful clean fresh air. It is upstairs in the carriage house, which is a short walk from the main house. There is a common area with snacks, drinks, coffee, etc. and sofas, chairs and a TV. No other guests were staying in the other rooms while we were there so we had it to ourselves.

Anna and Stan were wonderful hosts and innkeepers. They are both so friendly, interesting, and fun to talk to. Anna's treats (coconut butter cookies and rum cake) and breakfasts were absolutely delicious!! My personal favorite was the almond croissant french toast and the melt in your mouth scones. Yummy!!!
There was only one other couple staying there so it was nice to get to know them. They were from Pittsburgh where they own a bakery and were asking Anna for her recipes...so you know she's a great cook!!

Honestly, we're not big wine drinkers at all but enjoyed the wine tasting more than we thought we would. The vineyards are so magnificent to see and many of the wineries are so beautiful that it was really a wonderful time.

We ate the first night at Piacere in Cloverdale and the next night (on our anniversary) at Willi's Seafood in Healdsburg. Anna and Stan recommended both and they were both excellent and very reasonable. If you go to Willi's, make sure you ask Anna for detailed directions, as it's difficult to find.

It was a perfect anniversary!
Thank you Anna and Stan...

The Shelford House is a fantastic place and we absolutely enjoyed our stay. Anna has the right balance: friendly and a wonderful source of local information (restaurants; wineries; etc.), yet she allows you the appropriate personal time and space. The breakfasts were the best that we have ever had at a B&B. They were truly gourmet, both in taste and presentation (not to mention quantity!). Our room was spacious and delightful, with great attention to detail. And the setting for The Shelford House is perfect. To sit on the porch in the morning or the evening overlooking the vineyards is absolutely stunning--and peaceful!! And to top it off--Anna went above and beyond the call of duty when we left two pairs of dress shoes behind. We called her, she took them to a local "Mail-It," and ensured that we received them in time!! We would definitely (and will!!) stay here again. Oh, and don't forget to say hello to "Bob" when you are there; he will purr his way into your heart. --- Ralph & Sue
