“Hardly a "resort"”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2014

Blue Fish Cove Resort is a faded lady. There were few screens and the one there was did not keep out the bugs. Hundreds of them came into the cottage. The bottom part of the smoke detector was on top of the refrigerator and the towels had a bad odor seemingly suffering from poor laundering. The back exit to the cottage is a very messy area. It was a poor value and disappointing. Not nearly as good as the online pictures.

As long as expectations are for a lakeside fishing cottage then this "resort" is not bad. first the pros: boat launch, beach access with lake swimming at your own risk in the summer, beach fireplaces, gorgeous view of the lake and the opposite shore/mountains, very friendly proprietor who has owned the property since 1997 by her own admission. The cons: dead bugs/spiders in all the corners, a dead spider on the mast bedding pillows (the owner immediately came to change out the sheets for us since I didn't want to look in further in the bed), cobwebs in the master closet that had leaves suspended on them, NO TABLE anywhere in the cottage, LOTS of road noise from the road, a difficult turn off the highway due to the speed of traffic and the narrow driveway with no turn lane. There are 8 "cottages" but numbers 1-2 are in a duplex and cottage 8 is in the basement below 6-7. Cabin 1 is closest to the road, and cabins 5, 7, and 8 have lake views. We stayed in cottage 5, the "Captain's Quarters", which is advertised to have 2 bedrooms. The "crew quarters" bedroom is actually the room into which the front door opens although it does have two doors to shut it off from the kitchen and the bathroom. There is a bunk bed that barely fits between the hall door and the closet (both doors scrape the edges of the bunk bed), a ceiling fan, a double futon couch, a flat screen TV on the wall, and a dresser. A fireplace-shaped mantle/electric heater was the only heat in the cottage our first night (when it hit 20 degrees it was VERY cold in the other rooms, we had to ask for a heater for the second night.) This was also the living room, but since there was no table it was difficult to play games, cards, or do crafts here other than on the carpet. The main bedroom has a queen sized four poster bed dominating the space with a dresser (acting as a TV stand). There is a side outside door that has a lovely frosted glass insert but no curtain so the sun woke us up very early. This door has a very strong draft that blows leaves into the space so the owner had a towel rolled up as a draft-stop or the door. There is a small attached balcony with a two person table and a BBQ, nice place to sit on a warmer afternoon. The kitchen is adequately stocked although the gas range is ancient. A very small microwave is provided as well as a toaster, ironing board, blender, coffee maker, and dishes/pots/pans/soap/sponge. There is not enough counter space nor cabinet space to store food for an extended stay although the refrigerator is quite large. There is no table, just a counter/bar attached to the wall with four small stools underneath. There are no blackout curtains or shades in the kitchen so your neighbors can see into that room at all times. The bathroom was small but charming with beautiful blue dolphin tile in the shower, a sink with a rustic false front, and some nice art work; however, the towels were small and rough and there was no hair drier, possibly because the outlets in the bathroom or the kitchen were not GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupters), although newer hair driers often have this feature built in. Not having a drier certainly made me less willing to shower when it was 20 degrees in the morning and there was only one heater in the unit! The water pressure was moderate and the water did get quite hot although it was difficult to regulate between freezing and scalding.

Overall the kids were happier with this property than I was since we were there for a weekend wine country trip. But if I modulate my expectations to summer camping trip with beds, this would work very nicely for my family. There was a central picnic table for 6-8 people in the courtyard and a supermarket down the street. The game room of the resort is in the basement of the office building and is also quite cobwebby but there is a ping pong table, a pool table, a tiny air hockey table, and two very old arcade video games (they weren't plugged in, so I'm not sure if they work.) Just bring some bug killer and some extra cleaning supplies. And a hair drier.

Room Tip: cottages 1-3 definitely have a lot of road noise, I'm not sure about the others. cottages 5, 7...

I'm convinced there are some phony reviews for this place because there is no way this place could have gone downhill so fast. It takes months or years of neglect for a place to be this dirty. Cobwebs on the walls, musty smell, crumbs/dirt on bathroom and kitchen floor, dust and dead bugs all over the doors/windows. No way this room has been properly cleaned in recent history because there were also dead bugs on the shower walls. I understand that it's near a lake and bugs are an inevitability but this was too much!

The beds have tons of broken springs and most of the dishes I took out needed to be rewashed because they had food on them. The fire pit area had dirty chairs and cushions making it an uninviting place to hang out.

No way this place was worth the price they are charging. It seems like this must have been a nice place at one time but they have just gotten too lax with the upkeep. Bummer.....

They did have cable TV and free WIFI which was nice.

Tip: at this time of the year the lake had a lot of algae near their dock so you should make sure to have other activities planned if you don't want to swim in that.

This place is wonderful! We've gone there 2 years in a row for our anniversary. So romantic to sit in your cottage's front yard and see and hear the lake. Our dogs love it too! They're really nice people, the place is clean, and it's very peaceful and low-key. We highly recommend for anyone wanting to truly "get away" from the daily grind!

Room Tip: We stay in the beach house #8. It's right on the beach - you can use the chuckit to throw balls...

There should be a category for the type of traveling person you are, that way people could decide who is worth . I like a place with character and can stay in a clean strip motel. We actually stayed in the Baldwin retreat, which is part of Blue Fish. The place was not clean. It is a requirement that tenants wash their own dishes, that should be changed since many of the items we pulled out of the cabinet were dirty. The pool wasn't enjoyable unless you called and asked for it to be cleaned. On the positive side Jody is very nice though it would make a better first impression if the office, connected to the private residence didn't stink like bad cigarette smoke. Won't be back.

Stayed here in October 2010. The cabin was on the lake's edge & the views amazing. The full kitchen was a bonus, the bed comfy, and for the price, good value. Negative feedback will be from folk who wouldn't be happy with 'The Hanging Gardens of Babylon'!

Fabulous woman at beautiful Lucerne Tourist Info recommended Blue Fish. Didn't want to spend so much, but stayed in #7 for a bit more. SO PEACEFUL!!! Only one night, but with full kitchen I could imagine days sitting out on the deck enjoying the sunrises and sunsets. Big bonus was seeing otters playing on the boat slips. We were treated so nicely and couldn't have asked for a better 24 hours! Between foggy/cold Mendocino and hot/hot/hot Napa, this was the perfect refreshment.

Room Tip: Five or seven. I'd choose seven because of the big tree. If both are available, you decide!
