We had a beautiful day in Mount Diablo State Park today. Unfortunately, we only had a few hours, so we didn't get as much time as we would have liked, but really enjoyed the time we had. First, we drove up to the Summit. It was BEAUTIFUL. They had the 2nd story observation deck closed, so we'll have to come back for that. But there was a little bit of snow, and awesome 360 degree panoramic views. On the way down, we went to Rock City for about an hour. We had a great time climbing on the rocks and enjoying the beautiful scenery. We definitely will be back in the near future to spend more time hiking and rock climbing.

So close to high population yet so far away. You wind up the twisty road and another view comes every turn. All directions can be seen from here. The Golden Gate bridge, north bay wind farm, and South down Eastbay. Plenty of "pull-offs" to take it all in as well as a Park store at the top. Relaxing drive(if you're not driving) just take it all in. Picnic areas everywhere as well as camping spots.

Mt. Diable State Park, is a huge park on the top of a 3848" Mountain. One can drive to the top, on a dramatic, winding two lane road. It does take some time and is not for everyone, but the views are outstanding. On the clearest of days, you can see Mt. Lassen, Half Dome, Pyramid Peak, the greater bay area, Mount St, Helena. For anyone wanting to take it all in, this is worth the trip.

Mt. Diablo State Park is a must see for east bay folks and anyone else interested in local history, scenery, or hiking. You can drive to the top or hike the many trails around the park

It can get very hot and crowded in the summer, so a weekday morning is best. There are awesome views from the top of the mountain and lots of scenery on the way up. It's popular with cyclists as well so watch out for them.

Wonderful place to give yourself a good workout, and be rewarded with probably the best all-round views in the bay-area (CA, USA). Best time to visit would be spring & fall. You can see the city & golden-gate bridge in the west, and the windmills way past Livermore in the east. On a really clear winter day, one can apparently see the snow-covered Sierras !

There's quite a few trails, so there's ample opportunities to explore. You could drive all the way up to the top, but then you're missing out on the 'workout' part :) The road is somewhat windy and narrow, and you'll meet cyclists biking down at high speeds, so be careful.

My suggestions for families with teen/tween age kids -
1. Rock city - this is about 5 mins from the south park entrance. Great location with lots of nice rock formations for kids to climb up. There are parking spots and bb'q pits, so you could make this a full day activity. Fun and educational!
2. Drive further up to the Diablo Valley Overlook parking lot (near Juniper camp). Look for the hiking trail marked Juniper trail. This is a steep, but well-maintained 1.5 mile trail that takes you to the very top. Takes about 1 - 1.5 hrs to go up, and about 30 mins to come down. My 9 year old daughter was able to do this without much complaints and no physical discomfort. And be rewarded with amazing views from the top. Carry water and some munchies.
