“No need for Napa!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2012

Once we discovered Clarksburg, a small little town on the river about 10 minutes south of Sacramento, I realized I loved living here! You would never know you're still so close to the city and most of the wineries in the building are awesome. My favorites are Todd Taylor, Carvalho, and I think it's called Clarksburg Wine Company or Clarksburg Winery. Something like that. It's hard to remember with all the new wineries there now, but I know what parts of the building to hit! The details of my review are for these 3 wineries. The place gets insane when there are big events, so it can be a little difficult to get into the wineries at times, but if you hit it early on a weekend or on a weekday when they're open it's perfect. The winemakers are usually in the tasting rooms, so if it's not too busy you can get some really interesting information. We got a whole lesson on barrels from Todd one afternoon, which was awesome. I have more fun tasting the wine when the people pouring it are passionate and excited about what they're doing and you get that at all of these wineries. They are family run operations as well, so you can meet multiple members of the family (including the family dog in some cases!) The tasting fees are small and refundable with the purchase in most cases. And most of the wines are pretty affordable. There is no heat, so it does get chilly in winter! Some of the wineries have space heaters, but if you can't get close to one you'll be glad you brought your jacket inside. The building itself is also a cool sight to see, I definitely get why people want to get married here. There are some other fun wineries in the area if the Sugar Mill gets too crazy. Just down the road is Miner's Leap, which has a nice patio and tasty wines. Whether you are visiting or live here, Clarksburg is such a nice way to spend an afternoon without the hefty price tag and drive to Napa!

“A Wonderful Afternoon Outing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2012

I've spent plenty of time in Napa, Sonoma and Lodi, so I enjoyed the chance to try a different California wine country. The Old Sugar Mill is just a gem. There are eight wineries with tasting rooms, and a 9th opening soon. Although a lot of places charge $5 for a tasting, it is typically refunded with purchase, and a few places do not charge.

We took home a half dozen bottles of wine, and really enjoyed just wandering through the tasting rooms and trying a great assortment of wines.
