“nice little place for a burger and beer”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2009

The Back Abbey is near the Laemmele Theater in Claremont, tucked away in the Village Extension. It gets pretty crowded on the weekends, but is a great place for a lunch burger and beer. The burgers are on the expensive side, but are quite tasty. The fries are exemplary. Worth a visit!

“Special little pub in Claremont”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2008

The Back Abbey is a unique pub located in the Village Expansion area of Claremont. The pub, which opened a few months ago, is located in a small California mission style building next to the hotel Casa 425. The interior is very small, but there are additional tables outside. Nevertheless, this is a place that fills up quickly -- people were waiting for tables by around 6 pm on a Saturday night.

This pub feels very collegiate. The wait staff, clothed in black and white t-shirts, are a bit older and eclectic. We overheard one waiter talking with a patron about when he lived in the Basque region of Spain. The crowd is largely composed of students, faculty, and their families from the Claremont Colleges. And the menu, although small, reflects an effort to bring something special and worldly to the patron.

The beer menu is extensive. Beers are served in stemmed glasses. They are a little expensive, but the variety is excellent. The food menu appetizers, sandwiches, and several hamburgers (turkey and veggie burgers are also available) served on brioche buns and accompanied by light field green salads. The burgers themselves are topped with different combinations -- such as carmelized onions or feta cheese. Fries are excellent and are served a la cart -- large fries come in a paper cylinder and are served with herbed mayo (Belgian style) in addition to catsup. Also available on the menu are appetizers you might find in Belgium such as steamed mussels, smoked meats (very good assortment of three, served with bread and greens in lemon vinaigrette), cheeses, nuts, etc.

We sat outside where we were able to enjoy the music coming from the hotel Casa 425 courtyard (next door) and watch the people waiting to go to the movies at the nearby theater. Parking is available on the street or in the garage a block away.

So far, a very promising start for this new addition to the Claremont scene. I hope the (food) menu gets a little bigger, otherwise this place will really be more about enjoying a new beer and nibbling, and it would be nice if they had better tables and chairs outside. My companion, who is about 6' tall, found them to be really uncomfortable. Otherwise, a very nice place.
