Owner description: There’s a lot going on at Sierra Nevada. If you want to see it all, we’ll pull back the curtains for you. We’ve designed several tours whose durations and content vary, so one of them is bound to fulfill your curiosity—or try them all! Common among them is a dose of history that underscores our role as a craft beer pioneer. Depending on the adventure, you’ll get your hands on our ingredients, peer into brewhouse vessels, stroll beneath fermenters, overlook our packaging facility, and take in our sea of solar panels. If you’re over 21 years old, a guided beer tasting of new and limited release beers, or sampling straight from the fermentation tanks just might be your next adventure. Choose your destiny. We can’t wait to show you around. Our tours fill up quickly! We highly recommend making your reservations online, in advance.

Even if you're not a beer connoisseur, this free 75-90 minute tour is well worth a trip to Chico for its history and the state-of-the-art methods the owner has made to incorporate environmental sustainability into its operations. The history revolves around its founder, an engineering wunderkind with a passion for brewing that has kept him from selling out to the corporate breweries. The tour visits each step in the brewing process with enough discussion from the guide and hands on activities to start your own microbrewery. Along the way, the guide will point out solar panels, fuel cells, waste composters, and hybrid trucks being used to reduce energy usage and waste disposal. Our tour ended with a tasting of ten different beers, about half of which are available only at the brewery or in local area.

If you go, I'd recommend getting there early for the best selection of tour times. The tours are given daily at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 4pm and fill up fast. We arrived at 11:30 on a Wednesday and the 12:00 tour was already booked and when we started our 1:00 tour all the other tours were full. I don't know if you can reserve ahead of time, but it's probably worth calling first at least to check on availability.

Several of the rooms are noisy, so if you really want to follow the beer-making process discussion, try to stick close to the guide. We missed a good deal of the discussion in the hops room.

If you want to dine at the brewery's restaurant, be prepared to wait, or call ahead to see if you can reserve. Its very popular but worth the wait. We dined at the restaurant in mid afternoon after our tour and the wait was already 40-50 minutes. However, we chose to sit in the outdoor bar area under heat lamps and avoided the wait.

Waitress Rachel/Renee was rude. Restaurant was out of several menu items. When I complained to her about the lack of items available she said "oh well". I told her that her attitude would reflect on her tip she indicated that she made plenty of money. The bartender was excellent!
