I am a little surprised to read so many glowing reviews of this hotel. We are locals and stayed here last night as a romantic get-away. First of all this historical property was nicely restored by local owners several years back and they did a very good job. It has a late-victorian western flair and is quite well kept. It is a nice change from standard chain style hotels you find near the freeway and its location in downtown near CSUC is hard to beat. That being said the place has some management challenges. First of all some of the rooms near the elevators are so tiny they are about the size of a kids room in a small track home. $160 for a tiny no-ammenties room in Chico CA is a bit much. I find some of the other reviews here a bit questionable by talking up things like a fridge "stocked" with water. Yes if two 16oz bottles of Costco case water means "stocked". The "complimentary" breakfast? It really is just a $10 off coupon and most breakfasts will run far more than that. The breakfast was OK about the quality of a diner with probably worse service. Not offered water, coffee while brewed in a french press tasted like folgers out of a can...if you want good coffee walk down to Peets or Starbucks. No jelly served with all the toast, no way to provide a tip on the bill. The food at Johnnies has always been hit and miss. Sometimes good, sometimes extremely poor. The hotel is loud and if it is crowded you will likely here doors banging and loud talking till wee hours even in your room. The walls seem very thin. The bar is cool with decent wine list, small substandard craft beer selection with only four or five beers on tap.. I mean seriously this is CHICO! It is like going to San Francisco and being served frozen fish! When we left at 8:30 in the morning an employee was vacuuming the check in desk area with electrical cords strung across the floor catching bag wheels and blaring over check out desk conversations..really? Not a terrible experience but at best a B- and more like a C+. Locals have always had a mixed opinion of the place and now I know why. Bit pricey for the room sizes and the amenities are just OK.
