If you have a few days to explore the Lassen National Forest area and are looking for water activities, spending sometime boating or swimming at Lake Almanor is a good option. However, if you have only one day or you are looking for hiking through pure nature then I suggest trying the nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park instead. Lake Almanor is a large man-made lake and is developed with houses and boats, jet skis, etc. The Lake Almanor Recreational Trail is a nice easy walk around the south side of the lake that is peaceful and pretty. At around 4500 feet it is cooler than the surrounding valleys, but still warmer than Lassen Volcanic Park (over 7000 feet). If you have your own boat there are several boat launches (also on the south side).

Kayaking on the lake was great. The weather rocked. I recommend a weekend trip here. I love seeing the birds. We watched some catching fish and took pictures. You have to visit this lake to appreciate the natural beauty.

Lake Almanor is absolutely fantastic, and completely underrated. It is similar to Lake Tahoe, but smaller, warmer and less crowded/expensive. One half of the lake has a great view of Mt. Lassen, which is a great day hike. There are lots of houses on the lake, so if you have a boat, Lake Almanor makes for a wonderful vacation. I've only stayed on the Peninsula and on the West Coast, both of which have their different positives. The West Coast is a little farther away from the action (if you can call it that) of the Peninsula, which has more restaurants and such. But the West Coast has a better view of Lassen. Chester is a great town that has some cool little icecream shops and burger joints. Almanor is underrated and absolutely beautiful!

This PG&E created lake is a mountain jewel hidden away from the normal flow of tourists. You can find lovely lakefront rentals, restaurants, beaches and hiking trails in the national forest surrounding the lake

Lake Almanor has been my favorite place in the world for as long as I can remember. With Mt. Lassen in the background, it is truly beautiful. Fishing is good and I love just motoring around the lake in our boat.
