This is our favorite retreat for just relaxing on a beautiful, out-of-the-way beach and pier, with a few good restaurants at hand. There's no highway or road between your hotel room and the beach at the Shoreline Inn: just walk out of your room and down the path to the sand. Exactly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Cayucos is a sleepy little town with zero through traffic.
Because of the shape of the shore at Cayucos, the surf pounds thunderously at all times, regardless of the tide. We find this to be quite hypnotic. Our most recent visit coincided with lots of wildlife action just off the shore, with otters feeding, dolphins capering, and sea lions growling.
The rooms have been updated. They are now bright with new white paint and nice, colorful accents. The beds are new and the generous pillows are much more comfortable than before.
