“Nice but old”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2012

For the price ($179 on weekends), I would expect fuller towels, fewer bathroom and sink stains, and window shades that work. There's a difference between rustic and old, and this place is old and in need of a refurbishment.

On the positive side, WiFi coverage is much improved over last year.

We stayed at the Carmel Valley Lodge from Friday night May 11, 2012 to Sunday night May 13, 2012. While the pool area is nice, the rest of the experience was very poor.
• The room was not cleaned. We left for a wedding around 1 PM on Saturday, May 12 and returned around 9 PM that night to find that our room had not been cleaned. The wet towels has not been replaced, the bed had not been made. The rooms are old and somewhat damp, so taking a shower the next morning with damp towels was an unpleasant experience.
• Late night noise, no one to help. Around 1 AM, lodge guests talking loudly, banging on doors, running around outside yelling at each other awakened us. This noisy behavior went on for a long time. We were exhausted the next day from lack of sleep.
There is no staff at the Lodge at night to help. When we complained about this noise at the front desk the next day, we were told that the way to reach hotel staff at night is to come down to the office and use the emergency phone near the front door. We were also told that these loud guests were probably coming from a wedding, that noisy behavior is part of wedding celebrations and that it would hurt the lodge’s business to ask people to be quiet at night.
We travel a lot and stay at many different accommodations–this was the worst experience we have ever had.

The place is pretty, but the amenities are very lacking. Cabin like rooms are too rustic. No drapes or curtains on windows, just shades that dont close well. Towels are old and worn and rough. Pillows are horrible. Toilet seat chipped. Lighting bad. It's dusty and badly in need of renovation and the breakfast might be free, but the coffee is not worth drinking.

We were in our room around 5:00, about to head out to dinner and noticed our heat wasn't working. We called the front desk and told them about it and they said they would take care of it and we headed out to dinner. We got back to our room around 1 in the morning and it was freezing in the room because the heat still wasn't working. The front desk was closed apparently, so we had to call the emergency number and that guy said there wasn't much he could do because he wasn't authorized to relight the pilot light! First of all, pilot light? This place is so out of date that the heating units have pilot lights? Second of all, your "night manager" can't even relight a pilot light for guests? I probably could have done it myself, but I was a little intoxicated and wasn't about to get on my hands and knees with a match to light a pilot light at 1 in the morning. We ended up changing rooms and had to drag all of our bags across the parking lot at 1 in the morning just to get heat. Place was pretty run down and everything was very out of date. Terrible experience.

We recently stayed at the Carmel Valley Lodge for a large family wedding.
Would highly recommend this place, we had a wonderful time, the staff were always going out of their way to help.
Beautiful location, and wonderfully kept facilities.
Many options of room types to suit all sizes of parties. Would certainly go back again.

In town for a wedding and didn't get a chance to really enjoy our time there but it was nice, clean and the pool looked great(we had perfect weather). The room was spacious and clean, maybe a little dated but totally fits with the area and style of the property. Service was friendly and helpful, they even had the beautiful, real wood fireplace stocked with wood and kindling which we did fire up late night.

Stayed in a 2BR/2BA cottage for one night in Oct with 3 girlfriends. Was the perfect setup for us -- twin beds in 1BR and queen in another. There was a sofabed in the LR too, but we didn't bother using it. The additional area with sink/mirror/hairdryer was very handy for getting ready. About the same price as two simple motel rooms but nice that we were all together and had the living room to hang out. The fireplace and s'mores were a nice touch.

We didn't need the kitchen or dining room for just one night and the free breakfast was more than adequate. Close to the village for restaurants. The BR with twins was a little noisy in the morning when folks started to leave since it faced the parking lot.
