“Average on all counts”

The wine list - we experienced a similar one in Monterey, was, on average, 60-100 % higher in price. The steak I ordered for $40 + was average at best - OK meal in a stodgy, overally formal environment - overrated.

“Romantic but overpriced”
Reviewed October 22, 2005

It is good for a first date if you are trying to impress a lovely lady or trying something different. The service is slow, the food is pretty good but overpriced... Its like taking a bite out of a lemon, everyone should try it once!

“Dissapointed!”
Reviewed October 7, 2005

I was very excited to eat at Marinus. I read a few negative reviews but remained optimistic. The restaurant itself is very lovely however, the service from the moment we sat down was very slow. It wasn't until the end of our meal that we got very annoyed. Okay, so we waited 10 minutes to even get something to drink. We forgave them when we received our appetizer of mushrooms and sweetbreads. Phenomenal. Our entree was good but not out of this world. We both ordered the Filet which was the most expensive item on the menu. It was good but not out of the ordinary. Then, we sat there with our finished plates in front of us for a good 15 minutes. At one point we even pushed our plates to the center of the table. I was anxious to try a dessert. Finally, someone took our plates away but it was another 15 minutes before our server came over to see if we even wanted to see a dessert menu. Well, we did but 30 minutes ago! They were very gracious and took 20% off of our final bill. We were in Carmel for 3 nights and Marinus was the least favorite of our meals.

“If you appreciate Californian-Friench cuisine.....”
Reviewed October 2, 2005

then make time for Marinus. It serves the best Cal-French food I've ever had (a bit on the French side to be precise). The basics are almost perfect, service is swift and attentive, and ambience is casual and warm. The total dinner experience was absolutely outstanding.

We had a variety of dishes including shashimi salad, sweetbread, foie gras, soft-shell crab, lamb rib-eye, filet mignon, etc. Every single dish was great - even the fries that came with kids' food were spectacular! I can't really recommend any specifc dish because they're all fantastic.

The only reason why I didn't rate Marinus excellent is because its desserts. You can easily find much better desserts in other Carmel restuarants, so we're a bit disappointed. I've had similar experience at other smaller restaurants that might not have a dedicated dessert chef.

Another minor caution: You might feel that the service is "too efficient" at first - the servants move fast and sometimes seem a bit pushy, but you'll soon realize that they, incl the bus boys, are very good at what they do and they just want to make sure you can go back to your conversation sooner.

The 10-min drive on the dark one-lane Carmel Valley Rd. proved to be well worth it. If you want to surprise your guests, just ask them to follow your car and they'll be in for a real pleasant surprise!

“Over priced”
Reviewed May 17, 2005

The wine list is over priced, do they think we don't know the price of the wines????
Food was good but over priced too, presentation was good, they have a problem with the dinning room staff and they are not very friendly.
