“Nice but more like a hotel than Inn”
Reviewed September 25, 2008

The staff at the Wayside inn were professional and helpful but more impersonal than at the B&B's we have stayed in around California. Our suite was a little expensive but very nice and very clean. The bed was the most comfortable we have ever experienced!!! Location is good and close to shops and 15 minute walk to the gorgeous beach. Breakfast coolbag was left outside door each morning - nice but nothing special.

Had a two night stay here in late August.

Our room was located on the upper floor of the rear building - probably the best location you could have at the hotel. The room was as described in other reviews - fairly spacious, large kitchen-like area with a fridge, toaster, etc. Our room had two very comfortable queen size beds with amazingly thick pillow-tops on them.

I was a bit disappointed in the rather ancient TV in the armoire, but I guess they haven't gotten around to updating it yet - having said that we didn't hang around the room too much and watch TV anyway, so it didn't really matter.

The room was quiet (except for a bit of neighbour noise).

Check in was quick and easy, and the reception area is nice with cookies and coffee available at most times during the day.

I only have two criticisms, but maybe I'm just trying to find fault where none exists. Firstly, the bathroom window fronts directly onto the outdoor hallway at the back. This is a very, very low-traffic area, and the window has been made somewhat oblique by rippling. However - they really should put a curtain or blinds up, because it is quite easy to see anyone in the bathroom, through the window. Someone can easily have a glance while walking past .

Secondly, I was disappointed in the breakfast. The bagels were hard, heavy, white bread bagels - rather tasteless. And the pastries were bland as well. We could have used two fruit cups and maybe a bit more variation in the cereals as well.

All in all - a pretty good stay except for those two things. I'd definitely stay here again, and that's probably the best praise I can give a place.

  • Liked — Location, boutique-inn feel.
  • Disliked — Breakfast kind of disappointing.

The initial impression of our room at the inn was not good.We booked on their website and were given a room tucked on the second floor which was wood paneled and dark and dingy. We immediately requested a change and were graciously accommodated and put in another building which had recently been remodeled. Our room was plush with two queen beds covered in luxurious linens. The rooms were spacious with a separate area with a refrigerator and microwave. Each morning a basket containing muffins, cereal and fresh fruit along with a newspaper was left outside of our door. In the evening there were cookies in the lobby along with coffee and hot tea. I hated to leave and I cannot wait to return. It was the perfect room in a perfect location. I have stayed in Carmel many, many times over the past 40 years and this was the best overall.

  • Liked — The plush bed
  • Disliked — parking in tight spaces on a slight incline

We came back from a lovely trip to Carmel and stayed at the Wayside Inn for a couple of nights. We really enjoyed the location, clean room and reasonable price, however, we did not enjoy the lack of sound proofing between rooms. We woke up when the neighbors returned to their room late at night, heard their conversations, etc.... I think this is a common problem with older motel style inns that have not been renovated to modern building standards. Bring ear plugs if you want restful sleep.

This was a return visit to Carmel but not the Wayside Inn.
We stayed overnight in Carmel on a trip down the coast from San Francisco we arrived at the Wayside to find our room wasn't ready (short staffed) and were told to come back in an hour - on reflection it might have been nice if we had been offered some refreshment but at the time it wasn't a problem. When we did manage to check in we were surprised by the capaciousness of the accommodation - Sitting room (with double sofa bed), small but adequately equipped kitchen, corridor with large cupboard, bathroom, bedroom with two double (they were only doubles not queens) beds and a second TV. Rooms were all clean enough and reasonably comfortable though the bedroom was a little on the small side (one double bed was pushed tight against the wall).

On cleanliness I will add that this Inn is pet friendly (I only booked because I couldn't find anywhere else and would have avoided it because of this otherwise), sheets are provided to cover furniture where a pet might sit. no animal smell was present (but I could smell air freshener) however pet hair was evident on the external stairs and a dog could be heard barking . Pet friendliness is something one should be aware of particularly if you have allergies.

Breakfast was provided in a picnic hamper delivered to the door and included two kinds of cereal, fruit salad, croissants, milk orange juice etc, however we decided to take the food with us for later in the day and had breakfast at Katy's Place (a well known local hangout) where we breakfasted in style on the veranda, congratulating ourselves on having arrived very early to avoid the large queue

We decided that Carmel itself is best seen at Christmas without quite so many crowds. We also discovered that Caffe Cardinale (a quaint little coffee shop and coffee roaster) which had served a reasonable cup of coffee 18 months ago now serves some of the most revolting coffee in California.

  • Liked — Size, location,
  • Disliked — Pet-friendliness
  • Tips/Secrets — Book early to stay in Carmel so you have a choice of accommodation. Carmel is pricey, better value for money to be found out of the town.

We stayed for one night in July 2006. We arrived expecting a single room with two double beds, one for our teenaged son and the other for my husband and myself. The outside appearance of the inn, like that of a rather old-fashioned two-story motel, gave us no reason to alter our expectation. What a surprise to discover the lovely (think toile) and commodious suite with two large bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a small kitchen. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the cozy sitting area in the room that served as the inn's office was stocked with reading material: not just the usual travel brochures, but a bookcase full of novels and a basketful of menus from the dozens of charming restaurants in the beautiful town. In the morning, a basket of fruit, cereal, and breakfast rolls, along with milk and juice, was left for us outside our door. We were sorry that our travel plans allowed us only one night at the Wayside Inn.

Very pet friendly hotel. Stayed in Room #6 on second floor in a corner nearest Mission St. CONS: Very noisy in the morning; garbage trucks, trucks with air brakes, construction was going on, car horns at 7:20am, building alarms across the street going off. Not very satisfied with that. Walls are paper thin. Microwave only worked when you selected the "Popcorn" button. Two windows didn't close all of the way. Very chilly. About a 1" gap at bottom of front door. Just stuffed a towel in to stop draft. Kitchen light sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. Paint chipped off of bathroom walls. Water conservation shower head. Toilet took about 10 minutes to fill tank.
Now for the PROS: Friendly and helpful front desk staff let me check out a couple of rooms for me to choose from. Early check-in. Fireplace was very nice for the family to enjoy.
For $140 dollars, I wasn't satisfied for what I received. The beach is 11 blocks from the hotel. Walked by several other inns that were much closer to beach and allowed pets. Do your homework before selecting this Inn.
