“Perfect Mom/Daughter getaway!”
Reviewed April 19, 2014

My 14 year old daughter stayed here while my husband and son were golfing at Pebble Beach for the weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful hotel which thankfully was an easy walk to shopping/dining and also the beach was a 2 minute walk away! Our room looked over the gorgeous garden and had a great view of the ocean. We'll definitely come back and maybe bring the "boys" the next time!

This place has a great location--you can hear the waves crash on the beach 2 blocks away, or walk to dinner & shopping--& beautiful grounds. But, unfortunately, they don't have enough staff to have rooms ready for timely check-in or to keep up with in the tables in the breakfast area. Also, things aren't plugged in in the rooms, the lighting in the bathroom is poor, and towels are skimpy-- little details unattended to, which hold this property back from being all that it could be.

Stayed for 2 nights in an Ocean View room on drive up the Pacific Coast Highway. Originally researched similarly priced hotels in Carmel, Highlands, and Monterey. We choose La Playa because it is in a quiet neighborhood just a few blocks from the beach and town. We could heard the ocean from our room. The front desk provides complementary beach chairs and towels. Also had a wine tasting and fresh baked cookies and milk every night. The included breakfast was fantastic! Outdoor seating had plenty of heaters to take off the chill. The second day, we had to leave early and thought we would miss the breakfast. The front desk offered a "to go" breakfast box with pastries, fruit, coffee and juice.

The grounds were beautiful too.

Perfect location: Morning at nearby Point Lobos State Reserve, lunch at Brunos deli, afternoon at Carmel Beach and evening in Monterey.

Room Tip: Ocean View are worth it to get the sounds and view of the Pacific. Our room (307) overlooked a tile...

We started our Northern California journey in Carmel and I wish we stayed for a couple more days. The hotel is in a great location, easy to walk to shops and dining. The only issue we had was with our room lock and the hotel was ok about trying to fix it or move us. We didn't want to move rooms because we had a little terrace that I didn't want to give up. We ended up fixing the lock ourselves, it needed to be screwed in better. The hotel could have been better about it but they seemed a little disorganized. The hotel does have a nice breakfast in the morning and the swimming pool was also great. The hotel is really meant for couples and there was a family next to us with kids which was annoying since they kept slamming the doors and were loud. I would recommend La Playa to couples wanting a weekend away or possibly a girls weekend. We will be coming back for sure!

Room Tip: The rooms on the main garden level have a nice terrace and views of the garden or pool. The higher r...

I've been going to Carmel for nearly 30 years and have stayed everywhere from B&Bs to small hotels. La Playa is by far the best hotel in Carmel. That's not to say it doesn't have it's idiocyncracies but the service, property and spectacular views outweigh them. The service was nothing short of superb. Everyone went out of their way to make certain our needs we're met. Steven, the bell boy, even remembered we were disappointed to miss the cookies in the evening and he had them delivered while we were gone! It's small things like that that make a big difference. With this said, the rooms with an ocean view can be smallish and the bathrooms tiny but the views are expansive. There are no elevators but the bell staff makes up for it by handling luggage. Breakfast is included and it's more than ample if not abundant. It isn't the closest hotel to the center of town but it's certainly walkable. There is no on-site parking but you can find a spot not too far off. I might not recommend the hotel for those with disabilities but they might have accommodations with which I'm not familiar. All in all we loved our stay at La Playa and wouldn't stay elsewhere.

Beautiful hotel just two blocks from one of the most scenic beaches in the world. The breakfast is exceptional and the staff is very attentive and helpful as well. Would definitely stay here again and recommend it highly to anyone else.

We have just left La Playa Carmel and would return to this area for this hotel! It was fantastic!! Nothing was to much trouble for the staff, the location with ocean views was superb, they had little extras laid on with no extra charge, wine tasting, milk and cookies at night etc. we had a large room and the beds were lovely and so comfy we had a great nights sleep. There is a wood panelled bar which is beautiful and lovely views off the sun terrace! To top it all the champagne breakfast is amazing! Loved our stay and would definitely go back
