“Good Location, Good Value”
Reviewed April 21, 2007

Got a good rate booking through the Best Western website and was quite happy with my stay here. Had a decent sized room with a nice view of the ocean. Room was clean and staff was pleasant. The continental breakfast was pretty good and the location was within easy walking distance to the village restaurants and shops. Definitely would come again.

We had no direct intentions on staying in Carmel, but once we arrived
after the beautiful Pacific Coast Hwy drive, we felt this was the place to stay. The Best Western Bay View Inn was ideal for our family. We travelled with our 2 daughters (age 9 & 10) and even extended our stay by an extra night. The room was spacious and clean and we even used the gas fireplace. Our room was near the road, so the early mornings were a little noisy with garbage/recycling trucks but we are early risers. Breakfast was perfect - nothing fancy but everything was fresh and kids loved serving themselves. We walked everywhere and enjoyed the beautiful quaint town of Carmel. Great location to do day-trips to Monterey and vicinity. Pool was empty but
we didn't have time anyway. Would definitely stay here again!

What a lovely small Inn! We were only there for one night, and hated to leave our room with a king bed and corner fireplace. Everything about the place convenient and immaculate, with a great front office staff. Bed was so comfy, and double-sheeted. Continental breakfast very good, and breakfast room so cute! Could have stayed at this place for much longer ...

We ate at The Forge In The Forest across the street; don't recommend it! Calamari was fishy-tasting; stale mandarin oranges in salad, the onion soup okay.

DON'T walk down the hill to the beach at Carmel if you are out of shape/have difficulty walking steps/hills. Carmel is beautiful; the 17-mile drive breathtaking!

On December 13-15, we took advantage of this property's $89 rate and superb location. The inn is located at the top of the village, on a hill, so that many rooms overlook the ocean. As you might expect, the sunset is excellent--even from the pillows! We liked this location also for its relative quiet. Further into town, one might encounter more problems with traffic noise and greater tourist concentration.

When we checked in, we were initially given room #25, a rather gloomy room (dark) with view of swimming pool and Junipero St. I was annoyed at this choice because the inn was less than half full ("this is a light time of the week"). The receptionist then moved us to an upper floor with great views but with no balcony. This was fine because the balcony is included in the dimensions of the room, and a room without balcony has more floor space and is actually brighter. He reminded us that this room would normally go for $139.

Our double queen room was cheerful with bright yellow spreads to match the pine decor. But the bathroom was possibly the cleanest/newest that we've ever seen. The breakfast room should also serve as a model for other properties: large, clean, cheerful. And the included breakfast is quite adequate with orange juice, assorted beverages, fresh fruit, cereals, and pastries. There is free parking here and even some covered spaces--first come, first served.

The whole town of Carmel is at one's disposal but a trip to Point Lobos down the highway (10 minutes from the inn) is a must. With just a handfull of tourists, one can spend hours exploring the various trails and overlooks that make this reserve so well loved and photographed. The maps are quite helpful as are the rangers. We dined at Il Fornaio in the Pine Inn and at Grasing's, only two blocks away. The latter has a 1000 wine bottle list, assembled by the famous Narsai David. On our next visit, we plan to dine at the Flying Fish grill, a fusion restaurant with an intriguing list of specialties (artichoke bottoms, escolar) all at reasonable prices ($22 for the escolar is very good for Carmel). We will return to Grasing's for its wine list and sand dabs. Il Fornaio is probably more expensive than it should be, given its chain status.

During the high season, especially during the summer months, prices all over Carmel escalate and unfortunately so does the number of tourists. If you can take a two or three-day mini holiday midweek off season, you will be rewarded by not only a less crowded town but also decent prices. Now if only that guy behind the desk was just a little more generous with the room assignment....
