Description: Known for its big, bold flavors, Rio Grill has been part of local Carmel lore for over 32 years. We turn up the flavor serving local, fresh eats with a southwestern flair in wonderfully unpredictable ways, earning distinguished culinary awards and impressing food critics near and far. Opened in 1983 as a coastal counterpart to Mustard's Grill and soon-to-be Fog City Diner, Rio Grill turned indie in 1988 and never looked back, winning numerous reader's choice awards and inspiring food critics near and far. A permanent fixture on the Carmel food scene, Rio Grill is located at the gateway to one of the world's most celebrated coast-hugging drives - Highway 1. Rio Grill is known as the place for eating, drinking and carrying on. A high energy institution for locals, we're on a first name basis with many customers and have become the "go to" place for birthdays and special occasions - drop by and join the party!

Ate here 2 nights in a row on a Carmel stop over. The food was superb. The potato skin starter was awesome and the pork ribs were enormous and totally delicious. The waiters were so friendly and more than happy to help us navigate their extensive hi-tech wine list to find something to suit our tastes. The owner was great and made us feel very welcome. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable couple of meals.

We eat here about once a week so we must like it. The grilled artichoke is the best I have had. Everything is good. On Tuesday they have chicken fried veal liver. Nobody does it better. Slightly overpriced menu but we keep coming back. Would come more frequently if prices were a little lower.

We stayed one night in Monterey after a week in Big Sur luxury at Ventana Inn. I decided I wanted something comforting and easy to drive and park. This restaurant is it a shopping center, and is one of the better meals we had during our trip. We sat in the bar area with no wait. The onion/garlic soup was amazing as was the flat bread appetizer with blue cheese, carmelized onions and arugula. Dessert was a delicious banana cake with yummy coconut ice cream that we ended up ordering extra of. The service was very good. Atmosphere felt like a nice place that locals dined at, and not at all "touristy." The type of menu that has something for everyone.

This was a very busy place, we are so glad we went in anyway and within minutes were seated. The food was awesome, quick service, great attention, very friendly people working here, and seem to love their job and proud to be there
