It was a cold wintry December night in 2011 when our troupe of 4 very hungry friends were on the prowl for food after a long drive from Los Angeles. We literally tripped upon Hanagasa in the dark streets of Carmel. "Japanese" - we knew we can't go wrong with this cuisine. We are from Singapore where we have the best of the best in Japanese cuisine and yet this quaint little eatery stole our hearts the moment we entered the warm toasty hut.
Quickly we seated in front of the owner at the sushi bar and rapid-fired our orders of salmon sashimi, udon and sukiyaki. I was in true heaven. Fresh thick slices of succulent golden-orange salmon just slipped through our throats. Even the owner chuckled when he saw our faces that held that "I have died and gone to heaven" look. Beef Sukiyaki had the correct robust fragrance with tender beef slices. We stayed in Carmel 3 nights and we were hanging out at Hanagasa every night. Thanks for the wonderful memories.
