“Good experience but not great for families”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

My wife, 6m old son and I went at Quail Lodge for the long Memorial Day WE. We've chosen this place because we wanted to visit Carmel (as beautiful as South of France) but needed a family friendly resort/hotel. The price was certainly the deciding factor since a suite was listed at about $300 per night. The location is good if you want to visit downtown Carmel. The room are big and very clean (my wife is picky regarding room cleanliness). The resort is very nice, well appointed and huge with a golf course but...our listed Suite was just a large room with a nice and big curtain to separate the bedroom and the parlor. Not what we were looking for with a baby. Also we found that there is minimal staff in hand to assist you or give you a sense of being pampered. We like nice and luxury resorts and hotels. This one is just lacking the touch and feeling to make it into that category but I guess at this price one should not complain too much. Be aware that until August there is no restaurant on site (there is one on the property but 1 mile away from any room). This is the first place I've been to who is charging $30/night for a crib! Finally we had a very nice view of the golf course with a patio, yet we found that noise level between unit is not great (can easily hear neighbors taking showers, closing their cabinets or doors). For couple or big families with older kids, this place is for sure to be considered but for us it was just okay.

Room Tip: No room service and in case you need a Suite ask for one with a door separating living and bedroom...

My wife and I came to the Quail Lodge for Memorial Day Weekend. Before I go any further, I would like to say that the lodge itself has been incredible. Service has been fantastic - the conierge desk has been more than accomodating. It's on a beautiful location, rooms are clean. No complaints about the lodge.

My complaint has to do with the golf course. We signed up for the "stay and play" package (resort plus a round of golf). We scheduled a tee time and went to pick up our golf cart. When we were about to get in, a very rude older employee stopped us and demanded to know why we were only using one set of clubs between us. We explained to him that we always play with one set, but he rudely explained to us that it was club policy to have all people use their own clubs. He then asked us, "can you even begin to think what the members would say?" Then he stared at us. Offered no solution; offered no assistance as to how we could remedy the situation. We would have been glad to pay for a rental set, but he seemed intent on simply making us feel like we had offended the exclusivity of his country club. We finally just told him we'd just leave. He had a very smug look of satisfaction in us leaving.

My wife and I are both country club members back home, and we've never been treated so rudely by staff before.

So again, I can't say enough good things about the lodge - but I will never again try to play this course again, nor will I ever endorse anyone to play here.

After being closed for a couple of years, Quail Lodge has reopened, although remodeling continues in the main lobby area. The location of the Lodge has always been ideal. Just a few miles from the Carmel beach in the warmer area of Carmel Valley and surrounded with a top tear golf course this is a destination spot for all who want to relax. The rooms have been refurbished, are large with wifi, spacious baths, big screen TV and are surrounded by a 9 hole putting course which allows guests to take a glass or wine or bottle of beer, a golf ball and a putter and have a game on real grass putting greens.
Edgar's Restaurant is in the club house of the Quail Golf Course, good for sandwiches and their battered Sand Dab fish plate is very good. A great place for a drink and snack after a round of golf. There is a connection with Quail Lodge but do not rely on Edgar's for a nice dinner, even though the view of the golf course is nice. Edgar's, after we made reservations at 8:00 PM, notified us on the day of the reservation that they were closing at 8:00 and could we come in earlier.
The once great restaurant "The Covey" is set to re-open in August 2013 and they are closing the deal to bring in a chief from Las Vegas, so time will tell. Before booking, go online for the specials, if you golf you cannot go wrong with the package with Quail Golf Course which is in great shape. Go across the street to the historic restaurant for happy hour with great beers and sides while a local singer is playing Jimmy Buffet songs in the patio. and for breakfast in the same center is the Wagon Wheel which has fantastic omelets, hash browns etc and that is where the locals meet.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the golf course which is NOT in the two story building.

I have rarely had any hotel stay as satisfying as that I just experienced at the newly restored Quail Lodge in the Carmel Valley. We were there for several nights to attend The Quail Motorcycle Gathering on May 4, 2013, the most prestigious motorcycle concours show on the Pacific coast, and had the pleasure to be some of the first guests welcomed back to the newly renovated hotel, which reopened in April 2013 after a three year closure. The amount of work and effort that has gone into a complete and total restoration of this facility is truly amazing, and the results are absolutely spectacular! A reported $28 million went into it, and it shows everywhere from the parking lot (newly repaved) to the fantastic Sealy pillow top bed with the incredibly comfortable fine white linens and pillows. I was overwhelmed by the gracious staff, beautiful lighted grounds, wonderful continental breakfast, and serene quiet of the place. It was truly a special place that shouldn't be missed if you're in Carmel!

We were in room 215, very close to the reception area, which had a patio entered by a sliding glass door which looked out over the pond with the fountain in the middle of it, towards the outdoor deck area that is used for conversation and eating breakfast. Everything in the rooms is new and updated, with tiled bathrooms and glass enclosed showers with both hand held and wall shower outlets, along with a regular size bath tub. Big screen TV's are high resolution with great sound, there's a solo cup coffee maker and small refrigerator. We enjoyed every minute we were in the room. On the patios (or balconies on the second floor) there are two Adirondack wooden chairs and a small table with an ash tray. We did feel the chairs weren't that comfortable to sit in (because they had no pads), and they also were too large for the space outside our room, so they were difficult to access as you had to walk around them. But there are many patios much larger than ours was, next door in room 216 they had a patio with the same set up we had, but it also included a separate patio with a table and four wood chairs that was in a perfect setting overlooking the pond. I think I would request that room next time.

The main building lacks a restaurant, but this really isn't necessary to have here because the Baja Cantina (a very busy place) is directly across the street, and there's also a breakfast/lunch place called The Wagon Wheel (which we did not sample). On May 5 there was a large outdoor party at the Baja Cantina, with a live band that played all day but thankfully quit at about 8 p.m. that evening. The Baja seems to be the social center for the area and it has a very active bar scene and good margaritas, as well as some pretty good Mexican food.

Now for a few words about the staff. These are a group of young people that really try hard to make your visit memorable, and although they are all new to the Quail Lodge, they really did hit a home run with us! They were warm, gracious, charming, accommodating, and tried to make us feel special. It worked, we'll come back here every year for The Quail gatherings if we can get a room here. I suspect that will get much more difficult in the future if our stay was any indication of the pleasure of staying here. Management should be very proud of the staff they hired, and with more time on the job they're bound to become very well trained professionals.

Room rates start at $195, and it's a terrific bargain for such a superior facility. I don't think there is a bad room in the place, many look out onto the pond, some have views of a several hole putting course that runs between buildings, and others have expansive views of the property from very large decks. There also a nice pool and a work out facility that we didn't have time to use, but the equipment looked very complete and inviting.

Our weekend went well, and we also took home the Tiffany crystal trophy for First Place in the Superbike Division at the concours. It was perfect all the way around. Stay here.

Room Tip: Try room 216 because it has a really nice view and a great patio setting.

We had stayed at Quail Lodge over the years and it had become dated and tired. We stayed here after the "Grand Reopening" and had a wonderful time.Sarah Cruise, the General Manager, has put together a staff who, though they were still relatively new on the job, could not have been more attentive, accommodative and friendly. They made us feel good to be there. The rooms are really lovely, large and well decorated. The deck outside of the main reception building is inviting, with large comfortable seating. We understand that the new owners are the same group who own the Peninsula Hotel chain, so I expect everything to stay wonderful in this lovely Carmel setting.

The Quail Lodge is really quite nice. We had a very large King room overlooking the pool area with a private balcony. It was extremely comfortable. The golf course is stunning, and quite challenging. There is NO restaurant at the lodge, but Edgar's is a basic "club" restaurant up the road at the club house. Apparently, there is a plan for a bar. There is a lot of patio seating around the main lobby facility, so I would suspect there may be plans for a small restaurant/grill there.

Room Tip: If you really like privacy, there are some private suites that are actually more like cottages. Ther...

really impressed with the new decor, everything is spruced up , nice linens, and roomy rooms. Front desk is still going thru a learning curve, check in was confusing, staff didn't know how to transfer phone to other rooms, and there isn't a bell boy. However, they offer a continental type breakfast in which is a bonus. They don't have a spa anymore, but you can go up the road to the tennis club and there is a new spa, outdoor pool thing called refuge.. We will definetly try that out next time.
