Horizon Inn & Ocean View Lodge

We stayed in the Superior Ocean View room 120 and it was a nice room. They have done some good things to this property - granite countertops, stone tile floors, etc. There is a nice gas fireplace in the room. The bed was comfortable and the room was nice and clean. Just be aware, the ocean fog can be very heavy as it was all week while we were there... Superior Ocean View is just a name - it doesn't mean you will really see the ocean. I will say that it appeared, if the weather was clear, that this room would have the best ocean view of the inns around Carmel. There is also off the street parking, which is hard to find around Carmel. For the price, there are nicer properties.

Negatives:
*The Horizon Inn is on the truck route. We loved sleeping with the windows open, but at 7AM the delivery trucks start running, non-stop and it is a rude awakening.
*The Horizon Inn is not on the walking maps of town, as it is the farthest Inn from the central area - now that means just a couple of blocks, but it got old by the fourth day we were there.
*The breakfast baskets were not worth it. I would rather they just give us back $25 per day and keep the basket.
*The staff didn't seem really "up" on things around Carmel itself. There is a very nice health club in the Carmel Mall, about 6 blocks away. They sent us about 3 miles away to a shopping center with a worn out health club. When we asked the desk clerk to make a dinner reservation for us, he seemed offended (though he did end up making it for us).

My family of four spent four days at the Horizon Inn the week of 09 July 2005. We had a fabulous time.

Now, there are lodging choices that will provide better amenities, better views, but few can provide a better value. The rooms were clean; we opted for two rooms, connected by an adjoining door. Our kids roughed it in a room with two queen beds, and my wife and I enjoyed our king bed. The linens are clean and the decorating choice is muted, but rich in a subtle way. The bed was very comfortable.

Breakfast consists of a straw basket placed outside the door before 8 a.m...tho we arranged to have baskets provided the night before so we could make an early morning surfing trip up to Santa Cruz. The granola was fine, but the pastries do tend to be a bit dried out. The fresh juice and fruit is a healthful touch.

The location is at the top of the hill, on the outskirts of "downtown," but a short five to 10 minute walk down to all the shops and restaurants.

The location is convenient to Pacific Coast Hwy, tho the traffic to Carmel Valley can get a bit backed up at times. For families, there is a laundermat just a half block outside the Inn complex. The location was quiet and a good haven for a restful night's sleep. We never experienced any noise during our four nights there.

The kitchenette area is clean, with a microwave, mini-fridge (very cold) and cabinets stocked with plates, cups and flatware. Perfect for heating up and storing dinner leftovers.

Dined at the Hog's Breadth Inn, Tutto Mondo and Flaherty's. All good solid choices, tho our favorite was the Hog's Breadth, with a first-rate Salmon dish and Banana Bread Pudding to die for, so say my wife. (Now that I reminded her of it, she says she is craving it.) Tutto Mondo had good food, but is boisterous and patrons are "shoehorned" in tight seats. The chow makes up for this tough.

We highly recommend the Horizon Inn for families and for value-minded travelers.

My husband and I stayed at the Horizon Inn for four nights while on our honeymoon. The location is perfect for walking to Carmel's lovely shopping and dining area. The room we stayed in had the most beautiful view and the staff was friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay with a great view, it's worth the money.

The Horizon Inn was reasonably nice; the room was clean and well maintained and that was really it. We unfortunately had neither an ocean view or a horizon view; our view was a six foot wall and even when you stood on the patio chair (which I dont think you should do!) all you could see was the roof of the house next door to the hotel. We could also hear every single footstep the people in the room above us took.

Breakfast was pretty much a disaster; cereal that was tasteless, and pastries that tasted and felt like they were more than a couple of days old. The fruit and orange juice were better though, but its hard to go wrong with either of these. As soon as we were showered and dressed we went out for breakfast.

Personally I wouldnt stay here again, but if all you're looking for is a place to lay your head at night, then you have your ideal inn.

This place is not so great. We read all the reviews and were excited about staying there. We stayed in an ocean view room. It did have an ocean view, but the ocean is really far way, and you have to overlook all the roof tops. You walk into the room, and for the price, the decor just gives you the feeling that they're cutting corners. For breakfast, they definitely skimped. We got a continental breakfast with our package, and they gave us milk that was about a week over the expiration date. Yuck! All the pastries tasted old. I'm less than satisfied with the Inn.

I really enjoyed staying at this Inn. We stayed here the end of September this past year and we were able to upgrade our room upon check-in and loved the spacious room with the fireplace and ocean views we were put in. Cute breakfast basket in the morning, although not too hearty, but I loved to eat breakfast out on the balcony. Very nice Inn staff and a very clean place. We'll be back!

We stayed at the Ocean View Lodge. We loved it and will go back again on our next trip to Carmel.
The cottage was very spacious and having a kitchen was wonderful!
Great housekeeping staff too!
Wonderful service, and only a few blocks from the main drag!
