This is a lovely hotel to use as a base to explore Carmel, Monterey and its environs. The staff were oustanding and even contacted us when we left a jacket behind to have it sent on to our next destination. The rooms are comfortable and whilst the view or location are nothing to write home about, the eastern influence in the decor, coupled with the wonderful bed linen, lovely bathrooms and fireplace all make up for it. Excellent recommendations for dinner - Flying Fish Inn wonderful, and ditto Mission Inn - and a 5 minute walk to the shops.

We stayed in Room 20 which we think is the perfect room at this hotel. A wonderful seaview with a nice balcony made this a special place. The folks at the main office were very helpful. While the pricing is a bit high, we found that the overall experience was well worth it. Walking distance to all Carmel has to offer, we felt like we lived in the town for 3 days. The bed was comfortable, the shower was large and we had wireless internet. We would definitely stay here again.

We arrived as honeymooners at this hotel on August 4th, 2006. The place was clean and updated but as honeymooners it was a nightmare!!!! The person that checked us in was very unfirendly and unhelpful. She gave us a room with two double beds - - quite possibly the worst room in the hotel. #16 view of the parking lot. You hear cars and the security locks all night. The walls are so thin you can clearly hear people talking next door. We can also hear people stopming around above our heads all night. Our room was in the middle on one side was a family with kids and a dog .. on the other side there was another dog. When I poitely asked to change rooms the receptionist gave me a 'sorry we are completely booked - with a smile' ... like she was actually happy we were having such a misrabele time. I asked to speak to the owner and was told (again with a smile) 'sorry she won't be in until tomorrow'. Well, we actuallly just changed our flights to go home early because of this hotel - - it was AWFUL don't stay if your looking to relax. If you have a lot of kids or dogs it seems like a great hotel for you to stay in.

Have stayed at many hotels from small boutique hotels to major chains - in more than 100 countries - so I have some knowledge of what to expect in a small high-end boutique hotel of this sort. I will agree with what many reviews have said - both good and bad. Yes it was an old motor-hotel that was renovated and converted into a high-end property. Doors opened onto a central courtyard and walkways were otuside. The room was spotlessly clean. The bedding and linens were nice (but nothing more than we already have at home). We had a 'cooler' not a refrigerator in the room. The free breakfast was acceptable. My partner and I came for a three-day birthday weekend July 21-24 and we stayed in one of the most expensive rooms (with a direct ocean view) for $525 (plus tax) per night. Was it worth that price? No. Would we return? No. Did we have any major problems? Kinda......

There was one fatal flaw as far as I'm concerned. There is NO air conditioning in any of the rooms at the Tradewinds. After entering our hot room and trying to figure out how to turn on the air conditioning, we found this 'cute' little notice in the room that says something like "There are no hotels in Carmel that have air conditioning as it is not needed with the cool coastal breezes." No where on the website does it state this no A/C fact. There was no warning of this at check-in (even though the front desk staff did say it was going to be a hot weekend). Even more frustrating, there were no fans (or ceiling fan) in the rooms. Our room was HOT. Upon entering (at any time day or night) we had to leave the balcony door AND the hallway room door open to get any kind of cross breeze to try and cool off the room. That is unsafe and ridiculous. We had to leave the balcony door open all night (not entirely safe) to keep the room bearable. Granted we were in Carmel at a time when California was experiencing a record-setting heat wave. But I like my room COLD and if I'm paying nearly $600 a night - I want the option to have my room as cold as I want it - not up to the whims of the 'cooling ocean breezes'.

We will not return to the Tradewinds when there are so many other options in the Carmel area.

What a pleasure. Owning a hotel ourselves we recognize the effort
that goes into a top notch small hotel. The suite we occupied had 2 rooms. It was quality.. The professionally done suite was low key good taste. The bed and bedding, exquisite. There was a recent remodel and it showed. The interior doors are solid wood, the bathroom done in marble and stone was large and gorgeous. There was lots well designed closet space. The staff was almost too good to be true. They were pros. Thank You to all at the Tradewinds.

We were cruising through Carmel and happened upon this jewel and spent a wonderful, restful night. We liked it so much, we decided to stay a second night. Then, on our return through the area several days later, we decided to stop at the Tradewinds for a third night. I believe it's the most restful place we've ever stayed....quiet, wonderful beds and linens and a serene Zen atmosphere. Beautiful courtyards with fountains galore. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

I agree with what the other reviewer said about expectations. If you're used to Super 8, then this place is dreamy -- great sheets, large washcloths. But if you want quaint, or charming, or elegant, or unique, or heck, CLASSY, then keep on looking because this isn't it. This hotel is on Mission Street, and to get to it you drive past many a charming place, but then this dud is at the end, and it DEFINITELY has a motel vibe. My husband took me here as a surprise for my birthday, and boy was I surprised... he paid 375 for our room, but what did we get for it? No jacuzzi, no pool, an ok breakfast buffet, a relatively small room... I mean, generally nothing. To be fair to the place, I can see where it might suit some travellers. It has a very "male" feel to it. If you're a guy who likes a comfy bed, would never use any general social areas (there aren't any here unless you count a concrete bench and a patio chair or two) and is used to a corporate vibe, then maybe this place is your nirvana. But for those who want to feel something "special" after spending 375 bloomin' dollars... what a bummer this place is.
