“Camping in the woods, in style.”
Reviewed August 11, 2012

We were looking for something not too expensive in Carmel as Carmel is generally quite expensive. We are from the east coast but we just needed a place to stay on our road trip along Rt. 1 from SF to LA. (A trip I highly recommend!) I got the impression from the inn description that we'd be camping in the woods. We were prepared for something much more rustic. There was a nice fireplace, lovely queen sized bed, little kitchenette and table area. And the room was clean though a little older and it was quite roomy. Each cottage is different so I can only speak for the one we were in. In the morning we received a lovely picnic basket at our front door with a continental breakfast. We made the coffee in the room. You do get the impression you are in the woods but you are right in the lovely Carmel residential section. We spent a few hours walking through the neighborhood to the lovely shopping center and then the wonderful beach. It's hilly but great exercise. If you are looking for luxury accomodations forget this. But if you're up for adventure I highly recommend it. Not if but when we return to Carmel, this is definitely where we would stay again even for an extended stay of several days..

Room Tip: I would suggest if they are not full you ask to see a few different ones. I don't know if they d...

Expensive town so you are going to pay that bit more even for basic accommodation. The Carmel Resort Inn was 10-15min walk approximately from the main town and beach but this was fine as it was a lovely neighbourhood to walk through. Breakfast was fairly minimalist and this is definitely an area that could be improved. Tea, coffee making facilities, tv, fire, shower/sink...had everything we needed as we werent going to spend the day in a motel room. Staff were friendly and it was a quaint, slightly quirky place which i liked. Would recommend this place for people on a budget, but again, it was still expensive for basic enough facilities and room.

We got in 10 minutes before closing at night. Check-in was fine and our room was right across from the office. That's all that was good. It was really cold out (low 50's) and it was just as cold inside. As soon as we got in we went over to what we thought was the thermostat and turned it all the way to heat. Then we looked around and realized there wasn't a single vent in sight. We had to take the little electric fireplace that was sitting in front of a real fireplace (why?) and pulled it over into the bedroom side. Had it on all night and finally at 6 am we turned it off when we were warm. The worst was in the morning we saw the bathroom with rested eyes and realized there were long black hairs strewn on the ledge right next to the towels and in the tub too! GROSS! The "breakfast" consisted of unripe fruit, store bought muffin, and cans of juice (mango and apricot...wish it was OJ). We only stayed here because it was the last place available in Carmel for our 1 night stay. Would never stay there again. It's also not right in town so you have to drive down to the main area or take a good 10 minute minimum walk.

Carmel Resort cottages were very nice. They were small, but clean and nicely decorated, with a fireplace and 2 chairs! We regularly encounter rooms with only 1 chair and there are two of us, so having two chairs was great for our crib and rummy games. The bed was by comfortable as well.

This was an excellent value for the area including parking just outside the cottage, and a nice rustic setting in an aging residential area. A fireplace to take off the evening chill is a nice touch, and was also the source of heat for our (unusually cooler) stay. SInce we wanted to get to downtown, we found we ended up driving as the hike was a bit too long, and downtown parking was its own challenge. The service was very good, and the separation of the cottages offered a nice sense of privacy. As a starting point for visiting Point Lobos State Park (an outstanding experience we went several days in a row), and other local regional areas such as Big Sur, Carmel Mission, 17 mile Drive, etc. the location was excellent. The cottages, do show some age and the interior was OK clean but quite dated. If/when we come back we will likely stay closer in to downtown.

You get what you pay for, but considering it is Carmel, the room was cheap. However, the smell of the room when we entered was bad! The only thing we liked was the continental breakfast brought to our door in the morning around 8 am.

My husband and I booked this online from the UK based on the pictures on the Hotels.com booking site. Big mistake - the room was dreadful - damp, musty, dark and dingy. The bedcovers were depressing- dark brown satin. The carpets were old and worn. The bathroom shower head was hanging off the wall, the knob to transfer the water from the bath to the shower needed a strongman to operate and then rattled in your hand and threatened to come away from the plastic wall covering. If your neighbour was using their shower at the same time, there was no hot water and when it did come through was impossible to regulate the temperature. The wardrobe was pokey and the mirrored door broken - two old smelly socks were found at the back. The room bore no resemblance to any of those shown on the website. The guy at Reception has not had the courtesy to reply to our many e-mails complaining about our two night stay. Bookings.com say there is nothing else they can do for us as they are unable to check the validity of all the hotels that are advertised on their website. Totally ruined our Carmel experience. Other reviewers are right -pay more and stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: The Reception Manager apparently said we could pay more and upgrade to a suite. Never offered us tha...
