Spent 2 wonderful days in room 6. Breakfast in bed, cozy room with fireplace and scrumptious bedding. Great service from Randall. Walking distance to downtown plus wine and cheese each evening. Complimentary champagne for our 35th anniversary👌.

Could a spot get more lovely? Tucked just off the main drag in the super-walkable town of Carmel, this place is the epitome of charming. The staff is delightful and gives you that personal attention that is so deeply lacking in the modern world. From the outside looking in it can be described as quaint. From the inside looking out the better word is beautiful.

The rooms are spacious and have a modern aesthetic while still feeling very warm and inviting. The bathroom floors are heated and the bed was one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on. Breakfast is delivered to your door EXACTLY when you tell them you'd like it delivered and everyone is super nice.

A few dozen restaurants and shopping spots are withing a few blocks, and the ocean is just a 10-minute walk. If you have a car, there is beach after beach after beach along the 1, and tons of beautiful hikes to be found with just a few minutes of driving.

Can't wait to come back.

We had such a lovely stay tucked away in the sweet garden at the Vagabond's House this spring. The staff was kind, courteous, and available whenever we needed them, but we still felt like we were on a private retreat. The complimentary continental breakfast is quite generous, leaving us full for a day's adventuring. The rooms were elegantly decorated, the bed large and comfy, and we enjoyed relaxing by the fire each night. Just a short walk to the beach and the restaurants. I'd highly recommend the Vagabond's house for any travel in the Carmel area.

Room tip: All rooms look onto the courtyard, but the upstairs rooms feel a little more private.

Wonderful 2 night stay at Vagabond's Inn, short walk from centre of Carmel. Well equipped room, very comfortable double bed, TV incl. Netflix, working gas fireplace. Extra single bed in some rooms if travelling with kids. Charming hosts delighted to recommend restaurants and excursions, plus complementary afternoon wine + cheese and great conversation in central courtyard/fire pit. Breakfast pre-ordered and delivered to room. Complementary parking lot next to Inn. Highly recommended.

On a recent road trip, we decided to stay overnight in Carmel & booked Vagabond House Inn, a small hotel in a out-of-the-way location, yet only two blocks to the center of town. Parking was good. Room was clean and comfortable & decorated nicely. I would stay there again. There were just a few small incidences: 1) When we arrived it was nearly 7pm. The host who checked us in was friendly but was anxious to leave for the night. (we were the only guests at the inn that evening), so waiting for us to arrive was probably a bit later than expected. He DID however, offer us a discounted rate, which was very much appreciated. We carried our own luggage up the stairs and to our room. 2) When I booked the room, I was NOT told that there was a small "remodel" in progress across from our room. The next morning we were the only guests there except for a few construction workers outside our window. They were quiet & friendly, however, I believe we should have been notified during the telephone reservation process that construction was in progress during our stay. 3) Room Service was a bit funny - we placed our order the night before as requested by the front desk. The next morning around 8:30 am the room service waitress had a difficult time finding a place to put our food. It was a scramble to find a desk or table top large enough to accommodate our order. Awkward. 4) I have a suggestion for the Inn Keeper: Perhaps you can give your guests a secret code to access the coffee area that is adjacent to the lobby. That way guests can get coffee prior to the front desk opening at 8AM. That would have been better than perusing the town of Carmel @ 6 AM looking for a Coffee house. Yes, I would stay there again, if they will have us :-)

My husband and I have stayed at the Vagabond's House every December, for an average of 6 straight nights, for 20+ years. Over the last few years the Inn has had many lovely upgrades; the rooms have been updated to a more contemporary vibe. The room prices have gone up in keeping with the upgrades. Unfortunately along with the shiny new bathroom faucets comes a shiny new holier-than-thou attitude among the front office staff. The current manager, Thomas, has a sense of entitlement usually reserved for Hollywood A-listers, but we overlooked it when he took over for the previous manager because we loved the Inn. Since we had been such longstanding guests, we enjoyed a slight discount on our room. A few years into his run, we were told Thomas would no longer offer us a 'loyalty' discount during the holiday season but we could take advantage of said discount if we came at another time of year. I should mention that there were vacancies during our stay that year. This year, because of unforeseen circumstances, we needed to shorten our stay to 4 nights. I called in October to change the December dates (we made this year's reservation when we checked out last year). When I called I was told that there is a new 5 night minimum stay policy during the holidays and if we dropped our stay to 4 nights we would have to find other accommodations. Last year we were pretty fed up over the lack of hospitality at the Inn but decided to give it one more try. This was the last straw. We will not be staying here again. While the grounds are charming, the staff are not. There are an abundance of places in Carmel that offer both.
