My wife and I have been staying at Svendsgaard's Inn at least four to five times a year for the past 18 years. Years ago we tried staying at several different Inns in Carmel until a friend recommended Svendsgaard's and we haven't stayed anywhere else for the last 18 years. Great staff, clean rooms, great central location to walk to many great restaurants and pubs without driving. The breakfast basket delivered every morning of your stay is plenty filling, you do not have to go out for breakfast. Try this Inn, you will be very pleased and the price is right too.

The inn was only three blocks from Ocean Avenue, uphill. Not a steep hill, but it is uphill. Do be careful if you take side streets to get to the inn. Some streets are steeper than others. If steep hills are a problem, stay on San Carlos to get to/ from the inn. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The place was quiet in the evenings and at night even though there were children staying at the inn the same time we were. Other reviewers mentioned a small courtyard... Basically, it's for the pets to use (I wouldn't want to sit, much less picnic out there). So, yes, this inn is pet friendly with 20 out of 35 rooms that are pet-friendly. Since I'm allergic to cats, I had to make sure I got a room that did not allow pets. For our room, the closet area was dark, no light in the area. The fridge and the coffeemaker took up half the closet space. Our room had not bathtub, just a shower, which was very claustrophobic. Tall people will appreciate the high shower head. As for me, I didn't like it since it was not able to swivel up and down, just rotate around. The bathroom was clean and neat. The beds were comfortable, but not the pillows. All our pillows were hard as a rock, including the ones in the closet! The flat screen tv was nice with the typical hotel satelllite channel selections. Now for the continental breakfast... if you're a big eater, breakfast is not for you, the portions are small. Meal consisted of: (2) croissants, (2) orange juice, (1) milk, (2) yogurts, a banana, & an apple. They would alternate the croissants with muffins or pastry. Granted, it was nice to have the items delivered to our door in a cooler, but I felt it was more for inventory control and keeping the food cost down, especially for those that are big eaters. They did offer cookies throughout the day in their lobby along with coffee, hot chocolate, tea and water. Nice touch, especially on returning to the inn after walking around Carmel and visiting the beach. If you want to take a rest/nap during the afternoon, it can be a little noisy from the housekeeping cleaning (vacuuming) the rooms. We typically pack our white noise machine, but his time, we just used our laptop for a white noise website.

Check in was what I expected, I had made online reservations and my room was ready when I arrived. I had a room on the first floor that looked out onto the courtyard which was landscaped beautifully. There was a great grassy area for dogs. Breakfast came to the door in the am in a cooler with juice, yogurt, croissants, cereal and more. Check out was easy. I was given the names of pet friendly restaurants and places to go with my dog. Carmel is very pet friendly and there are great areas to walk, plus the beach is right down the road!

Room Tip: If you have a dog the first floor rooms are great as you just open the door and the grass/dog area i...

We stayed here for a night. We chose the larger double queen room. carmel is expensive. However this hotel was good. It is very close to main street. The check in was fast and quick. The room was very spacious, well lit. They deliver breakfast basket to your room in the morning. That is not sumptuous but a good start to your day. So you dont need to run for bfast early in the morning.

The checkin and check out was prompt. We would have liked if the people in the front desk had offered to make dinner reservations. We went down to Carmel downtown and realized that the most popular restaurant in town was reserved for the whole night. We ended up eating at a crappy restaurant.

I have brought my Sweethearts here two times and it was a out of the park visit both times. It has the old world charm and warmth that you hope for when you stay in Carmel. Clean and fresh feeling and even a peek through the Monterey Cyprus of the ocean. Highly recommend it. They have been inviting and warm to us both times.

Room Tip: The second floor ocean facing has views of the ocean.

When we need to get away for a few days, this place covers it all. Good restaurants nearby, easy walk to town and shopping. Parking is a breeze.
Staff is always there to help in any way they can which says a lot in these times where it seems people don't care about good service.

Room Tip: Second level seems more quiet.
