One of the absolute best restaurants in the country. Michelin doesn't have a central valley guide, and probably won't, but Aubergine is worthy of two stars, if not three. The cuisine is very creative, yet works every time. The staff is rock solid and the ambiance is intimate and reserved. Amazing experience both times!

“Huge ripoff - overpriced disaster!”
Reviewed September 24, 2012 via mobile

Wanting to have a special dinner, I booked Aubergine and 4 of us went there, looking forward to a great dining experience. Coming from New York, we are well travelled, sophisticated diners. This restaurant was beyond pretentious -- crazily overpriced...the chef is obviously trying to copy 11 Madison with disastrous results. Each course was worse than the next. The combinations of flavors and textures were weird and creepy rather than fascinating and exciting. All four of us disliked everything we ordered and felt completely ripped off when each couple paid over $350. We did have one bottle of wine which was mediocre and the least expensive on the list at a mere $90. They also charged a whopping $12 supplement for 4 little slices of ribeye and another big supplement for a teeny plate of ordinary cheeses! this on top of an $89 price fix. We don't mind spending big $$$ for extraordinary, but this place is a travesty. To add insult to injury, we all felt nauseous after and it certainly wasn't because we ate too much!

The food is excelent at this place. It is served as a 4 and 8 course menu but you can order individual courses as well. Service is great, and I highly suggest the salmon

“All bark but no bite.”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

This is a French Laundry wannabe that just does not cut the mustard. If you are a foodie looking for a satisfying (filling) and flavorful meal, this is not your place. We had the four course dinner for $90 and found ourselves wanting a big fat juicy cheeseburger at the end of it. Each course is the size of a walnut, pretty bland in taste and leaves an unsatisfied taste in your mouth. If it weren't for the little bread rolls, which were quite good, we would have been very hungry at the end of the meal,
The service was terrific but the food was a big disappointment, and, after all, the love of food is why we venture out in the first place. At the end of the evening here, your wallet and waistline will be thinner.

“Foodie heaven in Carmel.”
Reviewed August 16, 2012

Quality and innovative cuisine. Many unusual combinations of seafood and meats. Menu is prix fix for 4 courses; or, a multi course testing menu. Wine pairings are excellent. Service is attentive but not overbearing. Restaurant is in a 80 year old Carmel building restored to a luxury hotel. This is not a restaurant for kids or for a cheap, quick meal. It is foodie heaven and costs like it. Bring money and lots of it.
