If you want to be somewhat off the beaten path go to Carmel River State Beach. It's at the southern end of Carmel where the Carmel River empties into the ocean. This beach is actually part of a nature preserve so be prepared for lots of birds/waterfowl, fish, crabs, etc. - all of which are special. The sand at this beach is not the white, sugary sand of Carmel Beach - it's more natural-feeling. The beach is very low-key and when we were there it had lots of kids. There is a lagoon-like area that is created by the beach itself (again, filled with birds, etc.) and the kids were in kayaks, on paddle boards, etc. so this area is perfect for the youngsters - and there were several young folks just enjoying the water.
Pack a picnic lunch because this is on the edge of Carmel and a ways away from the main shopping/dining area, but it is beautiful. We had a very pleasant time.
I am from the southeast and have seen many beautiful, white sand, beaches. I have also had the pleasure of visiting Hawaii and enjoyed the black sand beaches and awesome sunsets. I never expected to be blown away by the beach in Carmel, but I was. It is now easily in my top ten favorite beaches. It is a beautiful beach with great access and is spacious. The sunsets are fantastic and the beauty of holes 8,9 and 10 of the famous Pebble Beach golf course are easy to see just meters above the sand.
Carmel Beach is not big but it is a fun place to spend the day with the family.. There are trees to climb and a nice setting for a picnic
Only visited this beach as part of an early morning run/hike, but with similarly spectacular views as the Carmel city beach, it seems to be less well-known and much quiter. There’s less surf, but it’s a wide, white and well-accessible beach.
The sunset in Carmel was breathtaking. We went to Monterey for the night and was looking for a place to watch the sunset and one of the best place that I’ve found was this beach. Sunset was a bit late but soooo worth the wait. Definitely one of the best sunsets I’ve seen so far. You’ll fall in love with this place, I guarantee. 😊
