This is an amazing French-style inn in the heart of Carmel. The place obviously caters toward the higher-end tastes, with a fancy small restaurant and very personalized service. The latter is definitely the highlight of any stay, and is unlike anything I've seen elsewhere.

As far as the rooms themselves go, they're nice but you can definitely find better- especially for the money. Even at promotional rates, this place does not come cheap even as far as Carmel goes (which in general a pretty expensive place to stay). The bedroom is small but well-appointed and modern, with most modern amenities including an iPod dock, large TV, and minifridge. The wifi here has got to be the fastest I've seen at any hotel- makes it easy to stream video or do business. The bathrooms are pretty exceptional, with heated floors, a huge spa-style tub, marble-tiled walls, and a nice layout.

However, it's the service that really sets this place apart. They spoil you, no other way to describe it: free cookies and milk every evening, excellent included breakfast every morning at the Aubergine restaurant, very prompt service and bellhop, a paper on the door every morning. The valet even left bottled water in the car for day trips, and was standing outside waiting at all hours of day. They greet you when you come and go and are very well-mannered. We came to celebrate our anniversary, and they had a complimentary bottle of wine for us. We don't drink, but it was a nice gesture.

The grounds themselves are well-kept, clean, and cozy. There's a small courtyard with some tables where you can eat, and a small lounge and interior dining area. The inn itself is double-story, but be aware that the stairs going up are pretty cramped and narrow. The whole property is pretty small in general, and parking is difficult- but fortunately there's included valet parking ($30 resort fee covers this and all tips). The inn is a short walk from downtown Carmel and the main shopping strip on Ocean Ave, and a few blocks from the beach. If you plan to mostly do shopping, it's an ideal location. Like most of the inns in the area, there's no pool, spa, or fitness center. If you absolutely must have those, book a hotel.

The only negative I had for the place are that the walls seem to be a bit thin and sound carries right through them. This is probably just due to the size of the grounds and building design, which dates back from 1929. If the upstairs neighbors turn on the water, you hear it, and same if someone slams a door or drops something.

Overall, if cost is no object or you're looking to really enjoy yourself in Carmel for a few days, the L'Auberge Carmel can't be touched.

Room Tip: Courtyard king is the way to go.

We pulled up to the front door and from that point on everything was taken care of from taking our bags directly to our room, intimate check in with wonderful homemade apple cider, parking our car, advice on shopping and dining and more.
The walk through the courtyard reminded us of stays in France in small Chateaus. While our room was small and up a narrow staircase, it was VERY comfortable and perfect for our brief stay. Bed and bedding was the best we have had in recent travels. Loved everything about our stay for sure!

We booked this hotel because many other options in town were already booked due to the holiday weekend. It was more expensive than we usually go for, but it was worth it! The location was ideal for walking to the local shops and down the the beach. The staff was very friendly and helpful. In fact, when we left one night to head to dinner at Roy's in Pebble Beach, they offered to drive us both ways in their Mercedes. I liked the turn down service with milk and cookies, and the small things like the salted caramels in the room, and the bath salts and water bottles put in our car for the trip home. We didn't eat dinner at the restaurant, but the breakfast was fantastic, freshly baked breads and pastries every morning. This hotel is on a level all it's own compared to many of the other local b&b's in town. Can't wait to go back!

We arrived Christmas Eve with no reservations at all. We had the option of just spending the day in Carmel or staying up to five nights. L'Auberge was the first hotel we wandered into. We asked if they had availability. They did. We asked to see a couple of rooms. They showed us two, happily so. The first room they showed us was a definite no. Too small, The second was great. But we opted to look around. We went to about 8 other hotels, 7 of them having vacancy. None of them compared to that second room.

We went back and were welcomed back graciously and warmly. Not pretentious at all. We have stayed at hotels where the snob factor is very high and it makes us uncomfortable. We are hard workers, we own our own business but we are not what might be considered "upper crust." So the warmth was so appreciated. We were shown to our room, our vehicle was parked and we were shown the amenities of our room. It was a large, wonderful room. PERFECT!!! We signed on for Tues/Weds/Thurs.

When we went down to breakfast the first morning, we were served by Laura. She is perfectly lovely and took such excellent care of us. Our croissants and toast were served with the most delectable strawberry jam I have ever tasted in my life. It was the freshest, most intense flavor. I commented that I loved it. On the morning of our expected check out, she had a little mason jar of it for me to take with me. I mean where else do you get that????

Every little desire of ours was taken care of. The service was beyond excellent. It was quiet and respectful and helpful and warm and perfect. I cannot say enough about all the staff. The room was amazing and our time in Carmel was just so great, we woke up Friday morning and called down to George. I informed George we just simply couldn't leave. George said the room was available for another night if we felt we needed that. Of course I knew I needed that.

All in all, it was one of the very best hotel experiences we have ever had. We have stayed at the entire spectrum of hotels. This is NOT the cheapest hotel at all. Rewarding ourselves for a great year in business and for doing some pretty great things for people was our priority. And this was exactly right.

Room Tip: If you want a larger room, or a room with a great tub...ASK FOR IT!
