This is a charming, intimate hotel with excellent, personal service perfectly located one street from the heart of the Carmel village. It is walking distance to the beach, restaurants and shops. We look forward to visiting again.

My husband and I spent a weekend here for our wedding anniversary. Immediately upon our arrival, we were greeted outside, at our car door, by Liz. She welcomed us in and offered to help carry our bags into the building. While checking in, George (the General Manager) greeted us, valet parked our car and brought our bags to our beautiful, luxurious room. Our room was nice and warm, considering we were coming in from the cold, rainy weather. The staff placed yummy caramels, japanese crackers, and bottled water in our room awaiting our arrival. Very nice touch!

Our first night, my husband and I wanted to explore the nearby shops and restaurants. So many nice places to explore. Shops, restaurants, art galleries, and even the beach are all walking distance from our hotel. Another plus!

Due to some remodeling in the hotel and their onsite restaurant, we had to walk two blocks for our complimentary breakfast at Cantinetta Luca. Not a problem. We like to walk. But George and Liz made sure we knew they would drop us off and pick us up if we'd like. We decided to walk because the weather was nice and when we arrived another employee of the restaurant at L'Auberge greeted us at their sister restaurant Cantinetta Luca. Again, very accomodating and breakfast was delicious! It consisted of a plate of fresh fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, two eggs any way you like them cooked, freshly brewed coffee, freshly baked croissants, toast, and delicious jam.

Our last nite with the hotel, we were surprised with a bottle of wine, dried berries, large slice of pumpkin cake, and a special note that wished us a Happy Anniversary. Thank you again George and Liz! They made our stay memorable.

One last note, it was storming the morning of our last day at the hotel but Liz kindly drove us to the restaurant for breakfast and picked us up as well. If you're looking for a place that takes customer service to a new level, this is your place! The staff we had contact with were second to none. We will definitely be back to stay again.

Room Tip: They are in the process of remodeling the front half of their hotel. And soon after the completion o...

Perfect location, attentive service. The rooms were clean, comfortable and quiet. The courtyard configuration of the hotel is very appealing. L'Auberge is not cheap, but not unreasonable for the quality of the accommodations. Breakfast was included in the rate and was also high quality. We will stay there again.

I would definitely stay at L’Auberge in Carmel again.
Best : Service: bell-luggage, valet, restaurant and front desk - everyone was prompt, helpful and friendly. Inner Courtyard: Better seen in person than in the pictures: Private and enjoyable for breakfast or evening cocktail. Restaurant: Eat here one night for dinner. The food and wine-pairing dinner was excellent, even if it does set you back some – it was worth it. Location: One block off of Ocean Ave’s gallery / shopping and three blocks from the beach. Driving in Carmel is unnecessary due to location, but if needed the hotel has a dedicated Mercedes for the valet to shuttle you for local trips (no cab necessary in town).

Room: We had a Deluxe Courtyard Queen (#16). Bottled water, snacks and turn-down cookies were complimentary. The bathroom Japanese soaking tub fully large enough for two and bath-salts were included (treat yourself). The stand up shower was on the small side, but fine. Bed was very comfortable, room quiet and dark for sleeping, in-room iPod docking station for music, free wifi. Only missing was in-room coffee maker for morning coffee (and NOTE: the hotel was happy to bring you breakfast, or morning coffee to your room – but I still like it in-room). Very happy with the room.

Other surprises: There is $25-per-day gratuity “resort” fee that included tips for all service persons (so no tipping required for services – valet, bell, restaurants). I’m sure this was to adequately tip due to Carmet visitor demographics - larger number of non-US visitors that don’t tip, and ‘mature’ visitors that come to Carmel. We liked this, but tipped extra when settling up the bill anyway. Service is important here – the bell service to get your bags up-stairs would be more important for visitors that usually would need an elevator. We had a small bag of bath-salts left in our car as a small amenity when leaving the hotel. Special requests to print out wine-notes was accommodated by the front desk.

To improve: in-room coffee, better liquor selection. The hotel has an EXCELLENT liquor selection for everything you would predictably want. But could use some further broadening, particularly with popular local “Craft Distilleries”, and a broadened cocktail menu (the need to get with the current trend of offering creative cocktails and specialized "craft-distilled" liquors).

L'Auberge had the 'maturity' and service level of a true boutique hotel, with the intimacy of a B&B. Would recommend and stay here again.

Dear Hotel_SnobinSeattle,

Thank you for staying with us at L'Auberge Carmel. I appreciate your feedback and please know that I have shared your comments with our Chef and Restaurant Manager. In fact, the Chef has already put into place their own cocktails - with some including barrel-aged cocktails. Perhaps on your next visit we will have the delight of pouring you a glass.

You feel like you are in a European country inn. We travel to Carmel often and I have been commenting in other reviews that the B&B rooms in Carmel, in general, are getting tired and need updating....but not at L'Auberge. It is pricier, but you are getting many wonderful amenities.

The full price rate is just above what we prefer, so we tried the hotel per a Jetsetter deal and at that rate, it was just right. The $25 resort fee states it's for tipping, but we still feel obligated to tip and the staff accepted it willingly. Nothing against the staff, because we find this happens at all places that add a resort fee. There's been only one place we stayed where a staff member declined saying it was included.

The snacks and caramels in the room were a nice touch, and we loved the cookies at turn down. The breakfast that is included is wonderful. There is a supplemental menu, but we felt the included breakfast was more than sufficient. In addition, everything is made in house, the jam, the bread, the pastries..the coffee was good, juice was fresh squeezed and we had two eggs any style.

Our room was a king courtyard, and we took advantage of the relaxing and charming courtyard. We also enjoyed the large tub in the room. Our shower had no issue with pressure; it was actually really good. We liked having the Bose Ipod base to listen to our own music. The bed was comfortable with lots of great pillows. The staff was professional and friendly.

We didn't try their restaurant for dinner because we already had plans at our usual favorites, but I would like to try it on a visit sometime, whether we are staying there or not.

We had a great weekend there and will definitely return.

Room Tip: We didn't see other rooms, but would stay in the king courtyard again.

We had a great weekend at L'Auberge Carmel. The rooms are quiet and comfortable, bathrooms lovely. I saw some reviews that complained about the shower pressure, but I would point the reviewers to the signs (all around Carmel) that the area has always experienced severe water shortage.

The restaurant was the high point. My husband and I have tried many different tasting menus, and the majority unfortunately do disappoint. This was not the case. Loved that the menu only listed the ingredients and really put us in the hands of the chef. Each course was wonderfully flavorful, with unique ingredient pairings. Cheese course was truly remarkable, unlike any we've ever had! The wine pairings were magnificent and were of the perfect amount (sometimes the sommeliers pour way too much for a 10 course meal or on the opposite end, too little to enjoy it fully). Overall, I would definitely rate this one of the best tasting courses we've ever had and like I said we've been to many including the French Laundry and Quince in California and many famous ones in Spain.

Finally, I had mentioned that it was my birthday when booking the restaurant reservation and it continued to be a special touch throughout the weekend as everyone mentioned it (at check-in, at the restaurant) and I also found a nice note and bottle of wine in our room. It was a wonderful touch.

Would highly recommend L'Auberge Carmel and will definitely stay on our next trip through the area!

Our stay was very pleasurable with only good things to say. Everything very good with the restaurant, with it's wine selection, on the top. We really enjoyed the tasting menu. Very well designed. The restaurant is small and has a very casual atmosphere without losing the gourmet characteristics.
