My fiance & I were visiting our family in San Francisco, CA with our children and had the oppoortunity to travel down Highway 1 to Carmel (on our own! What a treat!) We searched this site for recommendations and found that Lobus Lodge came up trumps. We booked via the hotel itself and the transaction was very swift. On arrival the receptionist was extremely courteous and effecient. Our room was on the ground floor with sliding doors opening onto a little patio area. Our room was really spacious to include massive bed (by english standards!) sofa, large TV, living flame fire, dressing table etc, seperate dressing area with wardrobe and ensuite bathroom. We were very comfortable in our room and loved the fact that the beach and the town were equally only a short distance away. We dined in a hotel just opposite Lobus Lodge which was very handy indeed. This is definately the place to stay if visiting Carmel and a bargain price at $120 per night!

We stayed on the 1st floor with a small patio area. Room was spacious, with king size bed, relaxing sofa, mini breakfast table, lounge charge, and a vanity table. Updated carpet and bathrooms with nice window treatment shutters. Nice toiletries, hairdryer, closet, separate walk-in style bathroom. Shower pressure excellent! The decor of the furniture is slightly outdated, but for the price, I'm not complaining! Only thing is if you're a light sleeper, recommend corner room on 2nd floor. You definitely will hear your neighbors above and beside you. Front staff is friendly.

Although we are local to the area, we had the opportunity to stay at the Lobos Lodge for several nights while we had some work done on our house. We drive by the hotel all the time and have never had much of an impression from the outside. We were very pleasantly surprised.

Let me start with the positives, of which there are many.

The Location: It has been stated before – but the location is ideal. As well, parking in Carmel is at a premium, so having a central location to leave your car is a huge benefit in and of itself.

The Grounds: You’re not able to tell from the street, but the landscaping is simply charming – full of tubs and containers of geraniums and flowers, tucked along balconies and into courtyards. Lovely.

The Room: I can only speak for our room, but it was huge – really a mini-suite, with a living area that included an armoire that housed the television, a safe, and extra pillows and blankets, a loveseat, gas fireplace and vanity/desk as well a table and chairs.

There was a separate alcove with the beds, which offer a nice touch – triple sheeting.

The bathroom was spacious as well, with separate sink and dressing area.

The overall décor was a bit dated – but neutrally, so it is not distracting. The room was absolutely spotless.

Then there was the large balcony with chairs and a table overlooking Ocean Avenue. We could also glimpse Point Lobos in the distance. Again, lovely.

The Breakfast: Upon check-in we were given our choice of delivery times for breakfast, and asked our preference of beverages. Breakfast arrived promptly, and the first morning, we were treated to the most delicious, warm and freshly baked scones along with fresh fruit, coffee, juice and newspaper (the San Francisco Chronicle) as well as a bud vase filled with flowers. It was more than enough for us – and a delightful touch to have it delivered. Each day was a different freshly baked treat with fruit, flowers, beverages and newspaper.

Other nice touches included turn-down service (complete with mints on the pillow) each evening; fantastic, salon-quality soaps and shampoos; an evening “reception” with cookies and coffee and tea in the lobby.

The negatives – and there are only a few…

The shower: We were blasted with cold water while showering a few times – and the water temperature wasn’t consistent.

The Office Staff: A bit stand-offish, we all felt that we were putting them out when we checked in and out or asked for something. Conversely, the housekeeping and grounds staff were all very pleasant.

Noise: As other reviews have stated, the walls are very thin – and we did notice noise from our neighbors to the right.

TV - The TV is situated so it couldn't be seen from the beds (if you like to watch in bed) - and the channel choices were lacking.

A few final notes – as has been mentioned before, there is no air-conditioning, but it is just not needed on the Monterey Peninsula. Open a window and let in some of that fantastic sea air, it’s all you need.

Finally, there have been a few negative comments about the “snobby” people in Carmel – but speaking as a native with many local friends and as daughter of a gallery owner – give us a chance, there are many lovely and down-to-earth people here. Have a great stay!

Just finished two night stay. We were very pleased. Stayed in Room 17, which had a small balcony. The location could not have been better. The service was excellent. Turn down in a reasonably priced place? Unheard of.....They do it. Nice breakfast delivered to your door with the newspaper. The muffin was homemade and very, very good.

For the money, considering how expensive Carmel can be, it is a good value. Thanks to other tripadvisor contributors..I agree with your assessment and thanks for the recommendation.

Carmel is really a beautiful town. Been there once before, but never had a chance to really "see" it. Suggest a long, long trip down to Hurst Castle...3 long hour drive for 96 miles (yup) on very tricky road, but the views are incredible and the mansion is really worth seeing. Make sure you can handle this type of driving..Lots of places without guard rails.

Oh, and along the way, there's the elephant seals that make the trip more than worth the effort. Absolutely amazing!

We only stayed one night here because they were booked the other nights that we were in Carmel. It was much nicer then the Carmel Sands, but also 50 more in price (150/night). The room and bathroom were spacious. The toilet and shower are separate from the sink, mirror, and large countertop area. Our room was a king with a balcony. The ocean view, was quite lacking. I think there might have been a patch of blue between the leaves on some of the trees and between the roofs of houses and other facilities.

There was a little gas fireplace in the room that was a little cheesy looking but provided a little ambiance. We enjoyed having breakfast (fruit, scone, and juice) served to our door promptly at the time we requested. The location is very convenient. Walking distance to beach, shops, and restaurants.

Two adjoining rooms was perfect for a few days with the kids and grandkids. Close enough to the beach, close to walk the touristy streets of the town, close to restaurants (Village Corner and Cassanova). The rooms were big and clean. The sofas and tables added to the hominess. We had a picnic dinner around the coffee table one night after getting home late from the aquarium. (With hot bread from Il Fornaio next door.) Recommend heartily!

I was a bit worried despite the high TripAdvisor rating because this hotel had a room available on a few days notice and was much cheaper (at $125/night, $150 with all taxes and fees) than many other places in the area.

But I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel location was phenomenal if you are even remotely mobile. My wife and I parked our car in the hotel parking on Friday and did not use it again until we left on Sunday afternoon. From the street near our room we were in sight of the beach and within site of most of the downtown Carmel Ocean avenue (main street area). From this location we could reach most destinations in Carmel with 5 to 10 minutes of casual walking, so there was never any concern for finding parking.

Our room (28) is close to Ocean Avenue, with a balcony openeing onto the main street. For us this was great though very light sleepers might be cautious. We turned on the fan located in the room and the white noise drowned out any noise from the street and we had no problems and loved the room location.

The room itself was not fancy but was all we needed and I would rather have an extra $100 in my pocket than a room full of antiques at an expensive B&B. The room had a king bed, a 60s/70s era dome fireplace, sitting ara, small refrigerator, seperate toilet/bath from sink area, and a nice deck. There room size was about 1.5 times the size of the normal business hotel I might stay in.

Breakfast delivered to the room was both good and bad. At check-in they took my custom order of reg or decaf coffee, tea, etc plus what kind of juice. But the food was only a pair of carrot cake muffins which were very good, but not quite enough for us.
But this can be easily forgiven for all the good of our room.

I would easily stay here again and recommend this hotel to others based on room size, location, and convenient amenities (fridge, deck, fireplace). FYI the shower is a standard bathtub and shower, but again, most of the time I will skip this to save $100 and spend the extra on Carmel restaurants.
