“Good Value at Winter Rates”
Reviewed December 23, 2004

Just spent two nights at the Sandpiper Inn. Overall, would recommend. Service is very good - both innkeeper Bill Lee and morning hostess Linda are wonderful - very hospitable and friendly. Bill knows the Carmel area very well and recommended a very good "local" Japanese restaurant that charges meals at half the price of the typical pricey eateries in town. The ambience of the inn is nice but casual - a craftsman styled building (the inn was built in the 1920's) filled with an eclectic assortment of furniture both antique and replica. Morning breakfast is continental but good, featuring delicious croissants from a local Monterey bakery, granola, yogurt and fresh diced fruit. One drawback, although minor, is a slight musty smell (like a used bookstore) in the lobby and library that I did not notice after the first night. The other drawback is the potentially high rates - I paid $119 per night in mid December, but don't think I would pay much more during peak season. Although I realize, rates in Carmel can be quite high for what you get. Keep in mind that some rooms are smaller and offer less privacy. My wife and I stayed in room 11, which I highly recommend for its privacy, quietness, space and best bay view (slightly obstructed by trees and homes).

Made reservations and pre paid but had to call and cancel 3 days before, Inn keeper gladly rescheduled the 2 nights instead of charging me for cancellation penalty. This was very impressive, and when we finally arrived they greeted my wife and I like we lived there. The rooms vary in price depending on the size and ocean veiws, we stayed in one of the higher priced suites and were very pleased. At night time theres no receptionist or staff people to worry about in the lobby- they leave you the place to yourself with a key to your room and a key to the main entrance which is a big cozy family room, fireplace and all. We had an unforgettable stay and have decided to make it our annual "gettaway". Their website is very thorough and informative and was the key reason we chose the Sandpiper. An actual 360' rotating cam displays each room completely, I might add that the video does portray the rooms a bit smaller, as I was surprised when i actually walked in and it was noticably larger room than i had seen on the site----But Thats probably a good thing after all.. There are plenty of nice places in Carmel, we stand behind the Sandpiper and recomend its high class but casual atmosphere to everyone.

The Sandpiper Inn is a cozy little B&B within walking distance of a beautiful beach. You will love the fresh salt air greeting you each day. If you want a quiet place to relax you will love the atmosphere of the Sandpiper Inn. There are no television sets in any of the rooms except the cottage room. If you like to walk, feel free. Each street has beautiful older homes which are second homes for most of the owners. The yards are all pristine with beautiful English gardens many of the homes have special names given to them. You won't want to miss seeing the famous "Comstock" homes which were built to look like the storybook homes in Hansel and Gretel. There are a number of great restaurants in town like the Portbella. I would definitly recommend a return visit to the Sandpiper Inn.
