“Excellent 4 Day Wedding!”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

Absolutely Wonderful! The hotel, the restaurant, the town, and the experience. We stayed at the Cypress Inn for 4 nights. We had two rooms. One room for our 3 teens and one for my wife and I. The rooms were extremely clean and very interesting. One of the rooms had an upstairs loft with a collection of antique books. The other room, while not as large, was also very tastefully decorated.
Also, the hotel has an incredible restaurant on site.

I agree with the comments about the front desk staff...could do a lot better. We had booked room 217 with a balcony overlooking the street. Wonderful sunny afternoon...great! Tried to have a nap after a long drive, about 3 p.m., which coinicided with prep time in the kitchen for dinner, the kitchen being right underneath our room. Sounded like they were hammering flooring and throwing pots and pans at each other....front desk said they were "pounding chicken", which I guess they figured was a legitimate response. I complained again when the noise level increased....front desk said "they think they had a note on file that I was warned about the noise", which was utter BS, and I said "nice try, but I booked on-line". I didn't appreciate the attitude. Long story short, got another room, #224, which had a whirlpool and a fireplace, but most importantly was quiet. Dinner in the lounge was great. Much better value for the $$ elsewhere in Carmel...

Dear Duncan T,

Thanks so much for sharing your comments. I'm sorry that your stay started off on a poor note. 217 is closer to the kitchen, and we are working to reduce any noise that may carry upstairs to this room, especially knowing how much our guests enjoy having a balcony. I do feel that we could have taken further steps to reduce the noise when you first reported it, and I sincerely apologize that a second call was necessary. However, I'm happy that we were able to find you an alternate, quiet room to allow you to enjoy the rest of your stay. Additionally, I am very pleased to read that you enjoyed your dining experience with us. We have a great team that truly cares about our guests' experieces. I hope you'll come back and see us and would be delighted to personally assist with a future reservation. Again, thank you for your feedback - it allows to quickly identify opportunities for improvement. Your satisfaction is extremely important to us. With kind regards, Fiona Ayers - General Manager (831) 620-7450.

Such a beautiful hotel!!

The gentleman working the front desk in the evening when I arrived was incredibly helpful and kind. The restaurant staff was a pleasure, attentive, but not intrusive. The bar staff was very professional and the service and the food was impeccable.

The hotel is located in a perfect spot to walk Carmel and enjoy the area.

The positives:
-- great locational access to Carmel
-- evening live entertainment in the lounge area is great with your dog
-- staff was very accommodating with directions and suggestions
-- external pet service was very professional (if you have to leave your dog for bit during the stay)
-- you will see/meet all kinds of interesting people and dog breeds

The negatives:
-- the interior dining area accessible for you and your dog is very tiny. If it is cold outside, these seats will be at a premium. For a hotel that caters to people and pets, it would be great to enlarge this space. I understand there are health codes to abide by but the balance isn't there yet.
-- On weekends be sure to make your dinner reservations at the hotel ahead of time. Just because you are a guest does not guarantee a seating. This is not a well advertised item.
-- the local street that the hotel is on is a lot busier than one would think with pedestrian and vehicle traffic. For the price of the room, we heard way too much outside noise early in the morning and late at night.

Room Tip: Call the front desk to reserve a room type that has the best chance of being away from the street no...

We were greeted by dogs and dogs. I was told I couldn't have a simple cup of tea in the main living area only in the dining area which was so noisy and dark that reading a book was impossible. The noise in the evening travelled up to our simple, no view room each night. We checked out early. And yes the desk staff is iffy at best. Good luck with this one!

Room Tip: Do not take the rooms at the top of the stairs. They are noisy and the "view" is a wall.

Dear Cecilia F.
I'm so sorry to read your review and learn of your disappointment. I can't possibly imagine how we would not have served you a cup of tea in our living room. From time to time we do have this area booked for an afternoon tea reservation, but outside of that it is open for our guests' relaxation and enjoyment. Regarding the noise, we have since adjusted the glass doors from the bar area to remain closed in the evenings, which has proven to be a great barrier to any conversation or music coming from the bar area. Of our 44 guest rooms, there are 24 different rooms types that vary in size, amenities and view, allowing for a considerable price range. I would truly love to have you back with us and invite you to reach out to me directly at (831) 620-7450. I'll select the best room available for you based on your individual requests. I am confident that we can give you the Cypress experience you were anticipating. Our staff truly care about each and every guest that walks through the door. We consider Cypress Inn our "home" and wish to welcome you accordingly. Best regards, Fiona Ayers. General Manager.

We stayed for 2 nights on a driving trip from SF to LA, whilst exploring the area. The gentleman at the front desk on our arrival was most condescending. However, the following days we had the pleasure of being assisted by another younger gentleman and a lovely young lady, which made up for the rude older gentleman on our arrival. The hotel itself is lovely and quaint and the bar area cosy. Our room was large and very clean. Apart for our initial un-welcome, we had a great time here and in Carmel.

Front desk staff not friendly. Feels like no one was really managing the hotel.

Positives: nice evening entertainment, bartender nice, excellent breakfast and service. Fogs seem well behaved.

Cons: front desk staff rude, loud at night and no barrier from bar area noise to the rooms. Rooms fair.

Dear Ntmello1,
Thank you very much for the opportunity to speak to you in person about your concerns. Your satisfaction is so important to us, and we truly appreciate the opportunity your comments have given us to quickly identify areas of improvement. I'm happy to report that the glass doors at the top of the stairs have been re-worked to do a better job of preventing restaurant conversations from traveling up the stairs. I hope to have the opportunity to meet you in person in the near future, and show you the true Cypress Inn experience that so many of our guests enjoy year after year. All the best, Fiona Ayers.
