“First Vacation with Dog”
Reviewed June 24, 2014

We were apprehensive about taking our Border Collie on a family vacation, but Carmel and the Carmel Garden Inn made our three night vacation perfect. Our room had a large fenced in courtyard so our pet could wander in and out off our room. The room was very large with a small kitchen with microwave, refrigerator and sink, a sitting area and the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on. Outdoors the Inn has a beautiful patio area with many flowering plants with tables and chairs to enjoy Happy Hour and breakfast. The homemade breakfast was prepared when we arrived to eat and included an egg casserole and almond waffles. Happy Hour also included homemade spreads and warm cookies. The staff was very friendly and advised us on many activities we could do in Carmel with our dog. Favorite activities included the Carmel Beach, where our dog could run freely and the Carmel Wine Walk. We will definitely return again.

You make all of us here at the Inn so very happy. Traveling with one's favorite friend, your dog, is always tedious for all of us. We love them so much and fear he or she will not be comfortable. That is one of the most important reasons Susan and I bought the Inn. We have these five large patio suites and the gardens. Our standard poodle and we frequently sit in one of them for an afternoon chat. And we sure agree with the bed quality. About six months ago, Dennis, Mary and Susan and myself had a sleep over in three of our rooms. Two days later we ordered the same bed for our home after sleeping on magnificent water beds for 19 years. And Susan, Mary and Laura sure love to cook those good breakfasts! Thank you so much, Julian and us all including our housekeepers.

We had a perfectly pleasant stay at the Carmel Garden Inn. It is located some 2-3 blocks from the heart of quirky Carmel and is therefore close by but nice and quiet. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, and they work hard to make you feel right at home. Good place for exploring Carmel, Monterey, and the stretch of the 1 down to Big Sur.

We stayed in room 4 with our 13 month old. It was an easy walk into town so it was easy to make short trips with the baby. The best part, we like having plenty of room when coming back for nap time. There was a spacious patio we could sit out on and talk and relax. The bed was SO comfortable and we never felt crowded in the room. There was a couch with a table and a small breakfast nook and the outdoor seating! It was all very private and relaxing.
The staff were simply amazing; so friendly and accommodating. Everyone we encountered made us feel like a guest in their home. Breakfast was wonderful. Home made waffles, caprisi salad... We will definitely return here!

My wife and me stayed here end of May on our drive up to to SF from LA. Excellent place to stay for a one night stop over. Within walking distance from the beautiful village of Carmel. The people in charge were really nice and welcoming. They even put up our country's flag on the outside :) like they do for all their customers. Wonderful place to stay.

Thank you for your review. It is gratifying to us to have so very many guests stay with us from other countries. Tonight we have two of our ten rooms with guests from USA. We ran out of room for flags for the eight countries! So happy you enjoyed our service and place. Sure agree Carmel is wonderful. Thank you so much, Julian and all of us here at the Inn.

The rooms were amazing, cozy and cute, they had an amazing breakfast and the nicest people around. I had never met someone always smiling and happy with guests. Also they are pet friendly and have treats for dogs in the office. My family and I had watched movies they had given to us and had laughed through it. The rooms are great for families and for couples some rooms are larger and some are smaller. Do not hesitate to come as a family. If you ever have a chance to come to Carmel this is where you should stay if you want a good sleep or a breath of fresh air or to bring your pets or for a honeymoon all with an amazing breakfast with a smile.

I have asked Mary, Susan, Dennis, Laura and Curtis to read your lovely review. Heartfelt thanks from us all. When we have an opportunity to have families stay with us, we are so lucky. Lots of laughing and fun and usually lots of talking and enjoying our gardens, sitting in our bistro dining room, and enjoying our food and wine. Mary came into work the other afternoon and said "I so love being here with our family guests. It gives me such joy." Then she gave me a hug. thank you for making our lives so happy. Julian and all of us here at the Inn.

OH the comfortable memory foam King bed, luxurious linens, new bath with lots of nice shampoo and lotion!
Window we could open for fresh breezes.....

The flower plantings are a wonder. Our room had a private patio. Being the lavender room we had pots of lavender all around.

We were welcomed with wine, cheese and fruit, then homemade chocolate chip cookies right from the oven.

After a quiet peaceful sleep we were treated to a lovely breakfast of excellent coffee, egg frittata, toast and fruit. Several kinds of juices were available as well as perfect bananas.

Welcoming staff with extensive knowledge of the area!

Room Tip: Loved our Lavender room with the King sized bed

With humility we appreciate and accept your wonderful review. A dear friend builds the beds, Monterey Mattress Company, and he insisted we buy them. Then, about three months ago, Dennis Mary Susan and i had a slumber party stay over at our Inn. Next morning Susan and I ordered one for our home. Agree totally. Dennis is a born gardener and he sends his appreciation for your kind words. We set food, the wine party, and the luxury of having a bistro dining room with excellent kitchen ahead of many projects right when we bought the Inn, March 25, 2013. The absolute fun of having you as our guests here laughing, telling stories, getting acquainted with all of us and our other guests is deeply rewarding. Thank you! See you again, Julian and all of us here at the inn.

My wife have been coming to Carmel for years now. We got married here and we love coming out here for a weekend to escape the craziness of the SF bay area.

We planned a weekend for my wife's birthday and planned to stay just one night and try out a new place. I saw this place and said "what the heck". So, I booked one night based on some great reviews. Wanted something that was dog friendly, big room, king bed, and a place where we can book one night.

Then after a long hard week, my wife and I decided we want to leave for Carmel a day earlier. I called the hotel and Jullien (the owner) answered the phone and told me that our room already has someone it and we couldn't extend our stay, "BUT, what we can do..." he said "is check you into a room right next door and then we can move all your luggage to the other room the next day" GREAT!

When we checked in Friday (a day earlier) we were pleasantly surprised with the place. Cute outside, beautiful small gardens (great job Dennis), and a great room. We stayed at room number 4 on Friday. It was big, quaint, and it had it's own private patio with a small garden. Perfect. Oh, did I mention we came with our two year old son and dog? This was perfect for our little one to run around in and out of the room without us worrying about him going too far.

The next day we went out and did some fun stuff. And when we got back to the hotel, the staff had moved all of our stuff to the new room. Nothing to worry about. It was just as good.

Pros:
- Large rooms
- Dog friendly
- Private patio
- Super friendly staff
- Easy parking
- LEMON BARS

Cons (I have to reach)
- A tub would be nice, all we had was a shower
- A little far from everything (mainly the beach) a fairly long walk to places but was a short drive

Overall, this is our new favorite place to stay for our random Carmel getaway weekends. Friendly staff, great place, OH and you should come for the lemon bars. Damn those were good.

Thanks Jullien and team for such a great weekend! We'll be back.

Room Tip: - Try to get room 7 (I think) the one at the very end. It looked to be the most private. - Bring a...

Goodness...thank you for your words. I certainly agree with you about the patio rooms. When I owned the Inn from 1986 to 1989, I took great pride in the opulence of having five suites with the gated private patios. However, known then as Rosita Lodge, the gardens and patio landscaping were taken care of by good gardeners but NOT Dennis. By naming each room and filling each patio with the appropriate flowers and plants, Dennis and Susan have really enhanced the atmosphere. And I agree..I have never tasted such lemon bars as his. When Susan and i bought the Inn March 2013, we agreed we would set a high standard for our food, gardens and most importantly, our service. Thank you for appreciating how far we have come. There are several truly lovely Inns in Carmel to choose from. We thank you so much for honoring us not only with staying with us and enjoying the patio suites, but naming us "Our new favorite". A lot to live up to and we take delight in pleasing. See you again soon, Julian
