“Like going for dinner at a good friend's home”
Reviewed May 21, 2009

We were in Carmel for a couple of nights in mid May. It was Mothers day the next night so I decided that I should pick somewhere special for the lady in my life. I went on line to trip advisor . The # 1 pick was as far as I got. The reviews said it all, although I must say that they were so good that we thought they were too good to be true. I Phoned and made reservations! The following evening we arrived 5 min before our reservation. and noticed a few people waiting outside. Walked in, Wow, a very small restaurant, beautifully appointed, filled with totally satisfied, happy looking patrons enjoying their meals. We were immediately greeted by Faisal, the co owner. He greeted us personally and asked if we were locals or visitors. We mentioned that we were from Canada ,and that it was the last night of out vacation, he assured us that this would be the best evening of our trip. He said that they were waiting for a couple of tables to clear, and asked us if we would like a glass of wine. Faisal poured us each a glass of good wine and we spent a few minutes in front of the restaurant visiting others, many returning patrons (All without reservations) waiting patiently for a seat. Everyone we spoke to raved about "Dametra" We were quikcly seated, as were all of the people that had just walked up!
The meals , the wine, the service were all above our already high expectations. The service couldn't have been better. and Faisal was there , as a good host and friend should be when he has guests in his establishment. We had more than enough to eat and decided to opt out of dessert, in liew of finishing off our excellent bottle of Carmel Vally wine from the cellar. To our surprise a dessert arrived ,son la casa. and we were delighted at how tasty it was. As we were finishing our wine, Faisal took down a string instrument , that had been displayed on the wall and with a very excellent singer (who happens to also be a staff member ) serenaded us all. The instrument was an ud, Native to Jordan. This was the pais de resistance to the evening.
We live in Vancouver B.C. Canada .and have a large selection of excellent world class restaurants of every persuasion. I will state that Dametra is the best restaurant I have been to in many years. Very simple recipe Great food , Great service, and amazing friendlyness offered to all who are fortunate enough to walk through the door! Thank you Faisal ,Partner and staff for making us feel like family!

“Fantastic Evening!”
Reviewed May 18, 2009

Based on TA's reviews and a local proprietor's recommendation, we headed to Dametra for dinner one evening on our vacation. It was like walking into a favorite relative's home. The owner personally sat us at our table, our waiter befriended us in a very authentic manner, they served us amazing food and wine. Brought us a few extra "treats" on the house, continually came to our table to chat, recommend other things to do in Carmel and were just all around unbelievable hosts! The restaurant is small (we were tucked in a back table by the kitchen but didn't even care b/c the ambiance of the restaurant reaches all areas) and I would call for a reservation. The restaurant was packed the whole evening. The owners even sang and played instruments for a woman's birthday and one of the chefs came out from the kitchen to sing a solo. What a fun, amazing time!

“Cool Little Cafe With Very Good Food!”
Reviewed May 11, 2009

This little cafe in downtown Carmel is very charming and in such a fantastic location while out and about shopping in the area. We did not have a reservation and we were seated quickly which was nice. The little cafe is open 7 days a week from 11-11 which are great hours considering almost everything closes early in Carmel. The ambiance at Demetra is very colorful and festive.

We wanted something lite and simple since we were having dinner at Christopher's a few hours after our meal here so we opted for a Baby Greens Salad which was very good and we shared the Lamb Wrap with came with a nice Yogurt-Dill sauce for dipping. The Lamb was flavored perfectly and the sandwich came with a very good small salad with a pesto dressing which was the perfect accompaniment to the sandwich.

Our service was a bit sluggish, we had wait at times for water and it took quiet awhile for our meal to arrive once we ordered. I would definitely return again, would love to try one of their entrees with a glass of wine. The prices are very reasonable also for a Carmel dining venue. I think this place will do very well in Carmel for a long, long time! :)

“Dametra - worth a visit”
Reviewed May 10, 2009

My wife and I visited this much reviewed restaurant with our daughter and were pleasantly surpised....we were greeted and after a short wait after our reservation we were seated...we order the chicken kabob sampler and it was really great...the istambul kakob was ok(the seasoning on the chicken was so good we should have complimented with something else). We were looking forward to the owner entertaining a bit but it looked like he was a bit crazy and we overheard him talking about being understaffed, this may have led to our dinner being a bit late...we had to check in a couple of times as tables that had seated after us actually received their food before us...overall a great restaurant we had a lot of fun and our daughter stole the show as she was screaming and carrying on....the restaurant is so lively it did not disturb anyone, if anything people were taking her picture and coming up and talking to her.....it was a very good experience and family friendly!

“Feel Good Atmosphere Wonderfully Delicious Dinner”
Reviewed April 29, 2009

We passed through Carmel on our move from Seattle and looked at the reviews of various restaurants and decided on Dametra Cafe and what a treat. We were amazed at the number of guests that arrived by 6:30 and the owner and his cousin (Faisal and Solomon) were committed to make all feel good. The owner serenaded all of us on the Oud as a guest was celebrating a birthday. The Greek salad and the special of halibut were amazingly delicious and a complimentary treat of Baklava was a perfect ending to a delightful evening. My husband and I are looking forward to making Carmel a stop so we can dine at Dametra Cafe again.
Make reservations. The restaurant is small, I believe he said 22 tables. Don't miss it!
