Owner description: Watch whales in winter and sea lions all year round at this Bay Area nature reserve, which offers hiking, walking, bird watching, scuba diving and magnificent views.

If you are in the area of Monterey or Carmel for a day or two I would highly recommend a visit to Point Lobos State Reserve. It costs about $10 to get in initially but the views and experience are well worth it! You have the option to drive to several locations and take in the views from a short walk or hike throughout the reserve. I would suggest bringing a lunch, being well stocked with water, and plan a solid half day to go hiking through. There is so much wildlife to see from birds to deer on the mainland from otters to whales in the ocean! The trails take you through the whole reserve and allow you take in breathtaking views of rock formations, spectacular tree lines, nature at its finest!

Those of us who grew up knowing and loving this place will be grateful forever to the State of California for keeping Point Lobos safe from 1950's developers who would have trashed this natural wonderland into an upscale housing development as they did further down at Yankee Point. Artists and poets have been inspired by the display of nature's force. Inevitably some infrastructure, parking spaces, toilets, trails, etc. had to be installed, but it has all been done with utmost sensitivity and care.

The policy of restricting the number of cars per day was one of the earliest attempts to safeguard natural landscapes from daily saturation. So be sure to get there in the morning and plan to spend the entire day, exploring and savoring this world apart from the world. Be quiet, be respectful of others' spiritual association with this place, and bring a bag lunch. This is not a place to haul out the BBQ, turn on the radio and play beach blanket bingo. This is a place to commune, to let one's spiritual side take over.

Above all, enjoy!

Visited the park for the first time and it was breathtaking! The views are spectacular. The waves were very strong today and they were crashing up against the rocks which made for great photos! I will definitely visit there again.

What a way to start the day. The sound of otters in the distance, grey whales spouting, waves crashing against the rocks made for a wonderful experience. The trails were safe to walk and the deers were a delightful surprise. There were birds, beautiful foliage, and the spectacular ocean view was more than worth the parking fee!
