“Beautiful resort--a nice experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2006

We stayed at the La Costa resort for one night as a quick getaway without the kids. The only bad part of the experience was the valet parking; it was terribly disorganized, although the valets were friendly and working hard.

We arrived at noon on a Saturday and were able to immediately check into our room, despite being hours before check-in time. While waiting in the lobby (which only took a few minutes), a staff member came around with cold bottles of water to give away. Under the advice of the valet assigned to show us to our room, we retrieved our car from the valet queue and drove to the self-parking lot right next to our room. Cheaper and more convenient. The valet personally showed us to our room, carried in our bags, and answered our questions.

We received a free upgrade on our room and were given a very large room with a comfortable king bed, nice furnishings, and a very nice bathroom with extra large tub. Some hotels would have called this room a mini-suite or jr. suite. It was quite large. It was a bit dark, as some guests have complained, but this didn't bother us.

After settling in, we ate lunch at Legends. Pricey but good food. After that we walked around and explored. The grounds are very pretty, with Spanish style buildings and lots of beautiful and well-maintained landscaping. There is a giftshop with clothes, books, children's items, sundries, etc. It also sells fountain sodas, wine and beer, Starbucks and some food. There are also a few nice boutiques that are fun to browse.

The "resort pool" was very crowded and had so many chairs crammed onto the cement that it was hard to get around. They did have live music playing, which was nice. The "family pool" had a tiny sandy beach, where kids were playing very happily. We ended up at the "garden pool," which isn't anything really special, but it was quieter. At first there weren't any fresh towels, but we phoned the lobby (there is a phone at the pool for just such occasions) and they immediately brought fresh towels. There was also cold water available, and you could order food brought there if you wanted.

For dinner we ate at the BlueFire Grill. It was overpriced, but the service was excellent and the food was fine. Let me recommend for dessert the Strawberries Marinated in Aged Balsamic. Truly wonderful.

After dinner we walked around the grounds a bit. The place has a great atmosphere at night, with lit fountains and a lot of people sitting with a coffee or glass of wine, or strolling around hand in hand.

The next morning, we went to Legends for the Sunday brunch buffet. This was the best meal of our stay.

Overall, it was a relaxing and enjoyable experience, and we plan to return someday with our children.

I have never in my life written an online review, but my experience at La Costa compels me to do so. Lazy, inconsiderate service permeates this place from reception to the spa to the restaurants. It is a study in inefficiency and disorganization. Here are several -- of a dozen -- examples: First, waited 1.5 hours for our room to be ready and finally got in around 5:30 p.m. having had to entertain 2 tired kids in need of a nap that whole time. Had requested a first floor room with a crib since we had 2 kids and lots of gear to haul in and out of the room everyday. Paying over $500/night and was shown not to the requested first floor room, but a second floor room with no balcony, no crib, abysmal, dark, old-looking furnishing, and overlooking the active construction of a pool. It HAD to be the worst room in the property. For $500 a night??? After much complaining finally got a normal room on first floor. Sat my 10 month old out on the grass outside our room only to find him 1 inch away from a cigarette butt and 2 plastic bags. Outdoor furniture was so dirty we threw towels over it to sit there. The second day the crib in our room mysteriously disappeared. I called at 4:45 p.m. to request another one. At 8:45 p.m. we still did not have a crib. At 9 p.m. still no crib nor at 9:15 p.m. No one at the front desk could directly answer my question as to why or seemed to care that I had a baby now 1.5 hours past his bedtime. We finally got a crib delivered at 10 p.m. -- FIVE HOURS after the request was made. Wait times at the restaurants between courses felt like hours. On one occasion, we had to ask if our waiter had gone off shift or something because he just disappeared and hadn't returned in 40 minutes. Do not valet park. Wait times typically 20 min for your car. Extremely chaotic and it's $20/day to boot. Both my husband and I waited 15 minutes just to check into the spa. It was absolutely packed and masseuse mentioned that the hotel had double-booked massages like the airlines do, and that the staff was going crazy. Nice and relaxing... The only reason we stayed here was bc the Four Seasons Aviara was booked. In contrast, the Four Seasons Aviara is absolutely spectacular with warm, caring folks and true attention to detail. Kids are welcomed and celebrated instead of just being tolerated. Stay there, please!!!

The family and I enjoyed the gettaway, the kids enjoyed the camp,
The spa was one of my all time experiences, loved the Spanish Herbal body rub...very relaxing. My husband enjoyed the golf and he said they were helpful working him on the course as single. We enjoyed Bluefire, had a nice table overlooking the Plaza.
However, we both felt a Sushi bar would be perfect. The kids loved ordering room service, very timely, I enjoyed the energy alixirs before heading out to the pool. Take the time to visit this recently renovated resort, you too will enjoy this great get away.

We stayed at this resort for the first time in mid-August for almost a week. We enjoyed every minute of it. The resort is first-class in its amenities, surroundings and services. The climate was fanastic. The rooms we had were more spacious that we had expected (having been to many comparable resorts). There were appointments that you don't just find in other hotels of the same caliber. The heated towel bar is unique and the bathroom fixtures are first class, just to name a few.

Most memorable in our stay is our experience at La Costa Spa! Heaven on Earth is what it could best be described. The massage was EXcellent - melted every stress knot away. The facilities provided a most tranquil escape. I enjoyed the waterfall, the steam room, the hot tub, the scrub... The service was outstanding nonetheless. Staff was very courteous, pleasant, knowledgeable and attentive (yet unobtrusive) to the needs of their guests.

The golf, the pools, the food - everything was just truly delightful.
I recommend this resort with 2 thumbs up and most especially its spa. We will definitely be back -- With my family (kids and all) or with a group of friends.

Thank you La Costa for living up to your reputable name. Our most valuable vacation time was well spent -- INDEED!!!

  • Liked — The spa
  • Disliked — It was artially under construction/expansion when we got there. It could also use self laundry facilities for the guests to use.

We had the most pleasant stay at La Costa last week. The staff was friendly and very attentive to our needs. My husband played golf and enjoyed the course very much. His golf bag was held by one of the many porters until he was ready for his round. I indulged myself in the state-of- the-art spa where they offer a complimentary mineral scrub in the resort's beautiful grounds. We highly recommend this place and will definitely be back for another visit.

I read many of the reviews of this resort and booked thinking that a suite would work fine for our family. Please be clear this is not a 4 star resort, three star at best and very expensive for that.

The pictures the resort provides greatly over state the quality of the resort, pools, rooms and golf. We checked into our suite and would not accept it very dirty, run down and old. We moved to a villa and stayed one night and then checked out and moved to the Four Seasons.

The outdoor dining patio had not been power washed in some time. Paint peeling off the walls, pools filthy. The "teen center" is nothing more than a unmanned video arcade. Golf course is flat and lacking irrigation. Villas are nice but the rest of the resort does not measure up.

I tried to find some good at this resort but could not other than the staff was very nice.

Our arrival was ignored by the $20/day valet, who misplaced our car after check in which convinced me to self park—$10/day. Daily aerobics consisted of the long walk to self park and back to our disappointing room. Nice flat screen. Lunch was comped after bad service and food.
