We’ve stayed at the Beach Terrace Inn twice now and will be back again. The hotel itself isn’t anything spectacular. It’s aging a bit, but being remodeled. The rooms are huge, and some have heavenly, newly installed Jacuzzis (great for washing off surf and sand!). The staff is friendly and competent. They have free breakfasts each morning with bad coffee and mediocre muffins, which taste OK when you take them back and eat them on your balcony overlooking the ocean. Most rooms have fridges, some have kitchens. The BTI is arguably overpriced, but is comparable to nearby hotels. It’s a pricey area. There is no restaurant at the hotel, but dozens with walking distance. And the walking is the thing: this section of Carlsbad is downright idyllic.

The Beach
Proximity to the beach is the best feature of the BTI: it’s the only hotel in Carlsbad that is truly “Beachfront”. The beach is clean and pretty and relatively uncrowded, a rarity in crowded Southern California. The water, as well as the summer temperatures, is surprisingly cool: unless it is July or August, most swimmers opt for wetsuits. (Some wear them even then.) Occasional sightings of porpoises and sailboats provide what little excitement there is, serenity rules here, save for some screaming from happy children.

The Town
There are a handful of decent restaurants and shops along Carlsbad Drive, but for a vastly improved selection, walk a little farther to the railroad depot and Village Faire area. There is usually an excellent band playing at an outdoor bar there. Pleasant, safe, and family-friendly.

Recreation Options
Non-surfing twentysomethings will die of boredom, which is one of the reasons we like it there. Recommended family-friendly fare include venturing inland and seeing the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park, which zoo-lovers will adore. Legoland is fun for small children, but teenagers will be suicidal, as the rides are too “lame”. Driving to LA or San Diego opens up options for countless theme parks, but there is little point in paying to stay on the beach in Carlsbad if you’re just using it as a base to go elsewhere.

The Rooms
The majority of the rooms are truly “oceanfront”: rooms 50 thru 64 and 10 thru 29 put you square on the beach, a shell’s throw from the water. Avoid the ground floor rooms – these are a little TOO close to the beach and/or pool, and noise/privacy becomes an issue. Rooms 30 thru 45 offer either no view or a partial beach view, but are cheaper.

Just got back from the Beach Terrace Inn a week ago and I can't stop thinking of it and trying to figure out when we can go back! My two young children (ages 2 & 4) loved it as well. We were able to get the room because of a cancellation, and they even gave us a lower rate. We stayed in a Grand Guest Room, just like the one that is pictured on the web site. I don't think it has ever happened to me that when I walked into the hotel room, it looks exactly like the picture. From what I could tell, all of the rooms have an incredible view of the ocean just like the hotel picture shows. To get to the beach, you just walk through a little gate. The beach and waters were extremely clean and peaceful. At times, we had a big part of the beach all to ourselves. It was great to be able to just walk back into the room when the kids got tired. It saved our car from getting full of sand as well.

We slept so peacefully to the sound of the crashing waves. The room was very clean and well kept. The beds and bedding were comfortable as well. They were in the middle of construction on the lobby, so it did get a little loud at times, but for the most part the waves drowned out the sound of the jackhammer. The breakfast was nice, with the usual boiled eggs, cereals, bagels, toast, lots of fresh fruit, and juices/coffee.

The cleaning staff does an outstanding job. We were so impressed at how hard they worked and they were so friendly as well. They have so many stairs to climb, not sure how they kept the smile on their faces!

My only concern would be the amount of stairs that you need to go up and down to get to the beach and to other parts of the property. However, that was my only concern.

If you are thinking of making reservations, call the property directly. The staff is very helpful.

Overall this is a moderate 2-3 star hotel, a little rough around the edges, but in a great location. The Beach Terrace Inn is truly right on the beach. Many of the hotels in this area have the words sea or beach in their names but are not actually on the beach. It is also within walking distance to Carlsbad Village. We were able to easily walk to most of the restaraunts in Carlsbad from the hotel. My husband and I were traveling with our 4 year old son and enjoyed being able to walk out of our room and onto the beach. The Pacific is still pretty cold in June so we appreciated the heated pool on a deck with an ocean view. I would also point out that the Inn sits on a public beach, but it was not overly crowded during our stay. Legoland is about 5-10 minutes away unless you hit traffic. My complaints would be the hotel is under construction (which resulted some noise and an inconvenient route to our room), the dead fish smell in the elevator, and the broken wireless internet connection, also due to the construction. Most of our stay was during the week, which I would recommend because the weekends bring crowds and loud teenagers. The walls are thin and we were grateful to be leaving Saturday morning.

I have been going to Carlsbad since I was born (20 years ago) and my parents have been going there since they first got married (26 years ago). 2 times every year we stay here at the Beach Terrace and are NEVER disappointed. (We are actually going at the end of this month).

The Beach Terrace is our home away from home, and it is the best family place. The location of the hotel is LITERALLY right on the beach- no exaggeration. The best rooms to get are in the lower beach building (pricer but worth it). They have a living room, kitchen, and seperate bedroom. That's a great room to have with the family.

If you are a couple and don't mind not being right on the beach (still with a full amazing view)- I would DEFINATELY recommend the coral suite in the pool terrace. Wow, this room is HUGE, has a full kitchen, enormous bathroom (with shower/toilet seperate from the sink, which is always nice when getting ready). The bed is also amazingly comfy, has a couch and table set.

Beach terrace also offers a continental breakfast which is pretty good (use to be better, but hey...it's free!) My family and I like to get danish/donuts from the local bakery...mmm they are yummy!!! and not too far-walking distance).

That's one of the best things about Carlsbad...everything is within walking distance...

If you are looking for a great family vacation, or even a romantic vacation...this is the place to go, and Beach Terrace is the place to stay!!!

*OH and I forgot to mention...the pool and spa are literally RIGHT OFF THE BEACH also. It's amazing!*

Don't expect the Ritz. This is a middle of the pack hotel, with a great location. The sound of the surf makes up for alot. The rooms were clean, and the service was good. A 2 block walk to the center of the 'Village'. We would stay there again,
