The Flower Fields are a wonderful sight for a few weeks in the spring when the flowers are in bloom. The growers often plant the different colors in interesting patterns (like the American flag) which is quite impressive when seen from the road.

Up close, this isn't much. The fields are only open for about two months in the spring; the admission charge is $11, $6 for seniors. Make no mistake - this is NOT a botanical garden. Rather, it is a working farm where the crop is rananculus bulbs. You cannot pick your own bouquet, though they would be happy to sell you one when you exit through the gift shop.

Best view of the fields is from I-5.

We attended a wedding at the Flower Fields, unfortunately there were no flowers at this time. I am sure it is beautiful when they are in seadon. That being said the reception was held in the barn and the wedding outside.

Well, it's officially Spring in San Diego and the Flower Fields at Carlsbad are a [definite] reminder of it. To get to the fields, you'll have to drive about 38 minutes, that is, if your starting point is somewhere near Downtown. Don't worry, the fields are worth the drive.

Once you get there you'll find ample parking. It may appear confusing at first, because the fields are immediately behind the Armstrong Garden Center, but you may park anywhere in the lot. Parking is free.

The fields are very lively, colorful, and yes, lots of children and parents, and grandparents, so if you want to see the flowers (mostly gorgeous Ranunculus), you'll have to come "armed" with lots of patience, a hat, sunscreen, and of course, good walking shoes.

Noteworthy: A single ticket costs you 10$ (one dollar off if you have your AAA card with you), but you may purchase a season pass for 20$. A percentage of the ticket sales, granted, not all of it, goes to the Vista Historical Society and Museum. This association donates time and artifacts to the fields: hosts, wagons, and wagon drivers --all volunteer work.

One more thing: food, drinks, everything else inside the grounds is cash only. You will find an ATM machine inside of the fields just to the right of the entrance.

The flowers are prettier from the freeway, or road and you can see them for free!

We took another couple visiting from Washington to see the flower fields, wow, what an expensive mistake. $11 a piece to walk around the perimeter of the flower beds. Ranunculus are beautiful flowers even though they have no scent, but this was a really boring waste of time.

You can pay $8-9 for a lousy movie at the movie theater....or you can spend $11 and have THE most incredible day walking through 50 acres of flowers. We were visiting San Diego and had the good fortune to keep watching the Flower Fields website for updates on when the flowers were blooming. We went early on a week day in late March. It wasn't crowded at all. We took over 200 photos and were there for over two hours. The further we walked the more flowers were blooming. I had never heard of this place until a photographer in Arizona shared the secret; so glad they did. This was a wonderful experience. Only disappointment was the gift shop, my mother wanted some nice floral gift cards. The ones in the shop were just so-so. Instead, I ended up using some of my photos and created home-made cards for her for Mother's Day that were much better than the gift shop cards. Overall my husband and I would highly recommend this. Be sure to bring your camera!
