“Last Min Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

My girlfriend and I were looking for a hotel in Carlsbad CA to stay in for one night so we could enjoy a night out on the town bar hopping and then have a safe place to sleep for the night so as to avoid drinking and driving. All the hotels in the area were booked for the night and this hilton was the only hotel in the area that had availability. It is farther down coast from downtown Carlsbad and not within walking distance to any of the restaurants or bars there. We decided to take the room and we would just call a cab to go into town. The hotel staff were very friendly and the hotel had a shuttle that offered to drive us into town at no extra charge so we wouldn't have to use a cab. However the bar and bartender at the hotel were both very nice and we were enjoying ourselves there so much that we didn't even bother leaving that night. The rooms were very neat and clean, and the air conditioning was very powerful. Our room felt ice cold when we first arrived there. Overall the hotel was a perfect little getaway for us and I would recommend it to anyone else looking for a place to stay in the area.

I almost hate to write a review because I don't want this place to get swamped and watch the room rates skyrocket and then watch maintenance and management go to pot (which is what happened to the Hilton San Diego Resort on Mission Bay).

I'll start with the miniscule CON. Bottom line: The reason why it isn't a 5 stars is there's a little 'something' that's missing. Or maybe it's a collection of lots of tiny 'somethings", but for $200+/night, I think I expected a bit more, or expected to be charged less, but maybe I'm spoiled. It's not right on the beach. They still charge for self-parking, even though parking is so plentiful, they don't give you an actual pass for your dashboard because the location is so remote, there's no reason why anyone would park there except to be at the hotel.

Now that I have my Debbie Downer out of the way, here are all the PROS: there is no resort fee, which i absolutely detest because if I'm paying to stay at your hotel, why should I be charged an additional fee to use your pool, internetl and fitness center (which most people don't use anyway)?!? The location is great if you don't want to be in the hustle and bustle of the center of Carlsbad and very romantic, but if you want to drive in, it's only about 10 mins. AND the hotel offers a free shuttle.

Of course, everything is beautiful and new, which is lovely. I LOVE the poolside furniture--the oversized loveseat/ottomans and the hooded, egg-shaped cabanas would be some of my first purchases if I ever won the lottery and add a luxurious, stylishly chic touch to the pool deck overlooking the ocean. The architect ingeniously put up a glass wall all along the pool and the restaurant patio so that one can enjoy the ocean view without freezing to death.

I am always a sucker for firepits and this place has at LEAST four! Not only that, they're spread out among the restaurant, poolside and patio areas, so you don't have to fight over one puny firepit. The decor is an eclectic but tasteful combination of midcentury modern, Craftsman with hints of Far East/Asian. The fitness gym is compact, but filled with the latest equipment and overlooks the pool and ocean.

Since we were Hilton Gold, they upgraded us to a partial ocean view. It also entitled us to their continental breakfast in the restaurant. But this was no ordinary continental breakfast...it was a buffet of fresh pastries with house-made strawberry jam and lemon curd, Greek yogurt with a variety of fresh fruit and berries, eggs, sausage, bacon and chicken apple sausage. We did not have the opportunity to eat another meal at the restaurant, but I certainly can't wait to try it.

We let the hotel know we were celebrating our anniversary and they treated us to strawberries and champagne. We are Hilton Gold, so I don't know if that was a factor, but it was certainly a thoughtful, indulgent touch. All of the staff were very friendly, helpful and on par with what I would expect at such a price point. I would love to return again, if I can afford it!

Why would you stay any place else in this area? Elegant furnishings, fabulous restaurant, spa and pool. We were treated like royalty from the time we pulled into the front entrance. Excellent valets--manager came to greet us personally. We had a lovely room that looked over the pool and the Pacific. Being Hilton Honor members, our breakfasts were comped every morning at their beautiful restaurant, Chandlers. We also enjoyed dinner there and enjoyed HH sitting by the fire pits overlooking the ocean. It was a magical time for us.

Room Tip: Ask for at least partial ocean front where you can get a good pool view as well.

My wife and I stayed here in May for a weekend getaway and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The hotel interior common areas are very nicely decorated and furnished. The business center looked very well equipped with several computers. The gym was small but had quality machines and some free weights. You get a great view overlooking the pool area and ocean from the treadmills. The hotel exterior is also very attractive with nice landscaping. The staff we encountered were friendly with smiles and greetings as we passed by.

The Pool area was nice and we enjoyed it each day. Pool is good size and heated so it was very comfortable. Hot tub was a little small with capacity for about 8 people but we enjoyed our nightly visit. Most of the recliners were taken in the afternoon but we managed to find a recliner and relax. The recliners were very comfortable. I imagine the pool area would quite full on a peak summer weekend.

Our room (#1044) was on the first floor without a patio. It looks like about 1/3 of the rooms have a patio which would be nice for relaxing but may not be an issue for some. The room was very clean and nicely furnished with a very comfortable bed and large flat screen televison. Room had a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. I really like having a fridge in your room to keep some water and drinks cool. The room had excellent soundproofing. I not once heard anyone above or next to our room which made for a very peaceful night's sleep.

Bathroom was clean and modern. Nice stand up shower only (may be an issue if traveling with small children that need a bathtub), nice tile, glass shower door and a great showerhead.

The hotel is located across the street from the beach. You just cross the street and take a stairway down to the beach (about 62 stairs). The beach itself was nice and plenty of room for us to find a nice peaceful spot to relax. A few surfers and sunbathers on the beach, not crowded at all.

We did not eat at the hotel restaurant Chandlers so not able to comment on that but it looked nice while passing by. There is a shopping center about 1/2 mile from the hotel which has a grocery store and several fast food type restaurants. The Carlsbad Outlet is about 3 miles north with shopping and plenty of restaurants. Downtown Carlsbad is about 5 miles north of hotel with many restaurants and some nightlife too.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and think it is good value for what it cost. The hotel is clean and comfortable in a very nice location. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Request a balcony room if you want one. Rooms facing the pool are nice.

The overall value is very good for the quality and location of the hotel. The restaurant could be upgraded as the food quality was not what I would expect in a first class hotel although satisfactory. We ate there the first night but did not return for any dinners as it simply was not very good.

This facility and it's staff were happy and willing to serve our every request. The location is breath taking since it is right on the beach and the pool and patios allow you to take full advantage of this. The lobby, terrace and rooms were very well appointed, clean and easy to enjoy. You won't be disappointed here.
