We have been timeshare owners for 20 years now and have exchanged into many "Gold Crown" Resorts....and THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM! First of all, the pictures are very missleading. It would appear that the resort sits very close to the ocean, when in fact it doesn't. You have to cross 2 major roads to get there, and when you do you'll be very dissapointed. There is no "beach" persay - only rocks. If you are a surfer, you'll love it, but if you just want to relax on the beach, forget it! (there is a surfer school right accorss the street). If you like to be awaken by the loud wistle and roar of a train, or like to fall asleep to the same noice, then this is the resort for you! Our unit was the closest to the tracks, so when we checked in, we asked that we be moved to a further unit. First we were told that there would be a $35.00US fee to switch rooms???....then we were told that the resort was full??? (meanwhile we had the entire place to ourselves the entire week - which seemed odd being that it was Spring Break).
The one good think about the resort is that it's a short drive to some very good shopping centres. The units are quite nice, but with maid service only being offered once a week - we didn't understand why the resort charges a "daily maid service" fee of $7.00US/day? They say that they'll change the linens twice a week, but we had to call both times for some fresh towels. We travelled with 5 teens, but there were no activities planned...even though it was Spring Break?.....plus the basketball and tennis courts were both closed? Needless to say, we did a lot of driving to keep ourselves entertained. The weather at the beginning of the week was ok at best. Very windy and in March, the wind was quite chilly. By the end of the week, we were wearing our long pants and jackets. So much for getting away from the cold Canadian air! Carlsbad is a beautiful place, we'll probably visit again, but next time in July or August and we'll be staying at a better resort where we can actually get some sleep! With our extensive travel experience over the years, we would rate this resort a 3 at best.
